Jason Williams, the once-flashy veteran point guard, has filed a letter with the NBA to seek immediate reinstatement into the league, an internal NBA memo revealed on Thursday.

If the NBA’s Board of Governors approves his petition, which was sent to the league’s 30 teams on Wednesday, Williams could become a productive free agent for contenders needing point guard depth. League executives immediately speculated that Williams could return to the Miami Heat, who he helped win the 2006 NBA championship, or the defending champion Boston Celtics.

Even so, the Los Angeles Clippers would have exclusive rights to Williams, but it’s doubtful in their losing and cost-cutting state they would want to do anything but negotiate a buyout with him.

Williams signed with the Clippers last summer, but retired before the start of training camp. After filing retirement papers in the preseason, he sent a letter to the league office on Feb. 6 and asked to be removed from the voluntary retirement list.

Williams needs a unanimous vote of the Board of Governors to waive a one-year mandatory waiting period to return from the voluntary retired list. Teams have until Feb. 27 to cast a vote, the memo said.

Williams played 10 years in the NBA, including stops in Sacramento, Memphis and Miami. He’s averaged 11. 4 points and 6.3 assists for his career.
highlighted the important stuff. What do you guys think?

No, Quinn sucks. The only thing he can do is shooting 3s. I'd love to bring J-Will back if he's healthy enough

If he comes back I think Rockets would take a look at him since there only point guards are Lowry and Brooks

What you didnt like his And1 yesterday

Jason Williams is essentially a poor mans Quinn at this point in his career. Spacing is very important to their offense, Wade needs the room to operate, kicking out to an open Quinn is far more effective than kicking out to JWill.

J Will was pretty much done with last year, the only way hes better than Quinn is if he returns to his championship form, you really think hes got that in him.

Wonder if hes broke or needs more money.

Aren't those two motivations the same exact thing? Actually, I guess you don't need to be "broke" to need more money...we all need more money.

I'm sure he still NEEDS money playing ball (even for the Clippers) for millions is better than asking us "If we want to supersize that" at the drive thru.

Thats a great call! I was sure the Clipps were going to be a playoff team and possibly even a 50 win caliber team. When Chocolate retired I just somehow lost faith. By the team the season started I predicted 33 wins for the season and mentioned that could on the high side.

I'm not surprised he came back, it's not like he is in horrible shape, I am assuming he still has some game left in him. He should ask for a buyout and sign with a contender

He's like Quinn+quickness and handles. We really could use him as a veteran backup and I'm thinking this is why Riley held still at the deadline when we needed a vet behind Mario.

I agree. He has all the floor vision skills of skip to my lou, and style, and he played his best in adelmans system. The only thing is him and adelman did not have the best relationship.

Wow. If he gets back in and gets the Clippers to waive his rights, that's a HUGE boost to the Celtics or Heat (probably Celtics). He and Joe Smith turn a bad bench into a great one.

Funny thats what I felt when I read your first statement. He played his best under Hubie, he was an asbolute bone head under Adelman, you must not remember those days

Quinn is an underrated player just because he looks like a teenager

YESSSSSSSSSS

I thought he retired too soon. Guess my tribute to J-Will (http://davissportsdeli.com/wordpress/2008/09/28/jason-williams-tribute/) will need a sequel...
