I believe it is a lot tougher. Shaq was a beast not a single doubt in that. I believe that Dwight is better. My reason is his pure athletic ability. Shaq was dominate but he is no where near the athlete Dwight is. Hakeem showed that while the Rockets were sweeping us. I believe Dwight is probably just as strong as shaq was. Oh and another thing....Dwight isnt even in his prime yet....so we havent seen his best ...in my opinion advantage Dwight Howard...I love me some Shaq tho...lets not get this twisted...

I'm with you! Shaq no doubt was a beast, but so is D12 and he's getting better everyday! Once Dwight gets a shot going He'll be almost unstoppable!

Wait until Dwight enters his prime to start comparing the two. He's still too young yet.

when dwight gets a shot, he'll be better than shaq was in his prime. shaq can't shoot, so if dwight can pick that up then it won't be a contest

Shaquille O'Neal will always be better. He was a once in a life time type center. Dwight Howard is 6"11. Shaquille O'Neal got the Magic to the Finals and Dwight will require a few more years before that happens. I'd take Shaq over Dwight any day. Way better.

Shaq accomplished more, Dwight is still under contract

i wouldn't. dwight is a lot better of an athlete than shaq, hes not just a big guy who travels and gets his dunks. dwight will be better, and plus he's still like 23 years old, he'll be better than shaq

I was fortunate to see Shaq's entire career. Howard isn't at the level Shaq was at his prime but only time will tell for that.... At this stage Shaq in his prime had more offense moves than Howard with his skill set today. Anyone remember Shaq's crossover? I think Howard has the ability to surpass Shaq in his career with because of how athletic as he is. Howard is doing things now Shaq never did. Shaq was never the rebounder or shot blocker Howard is today. So only time will tell in this one. Shaq def has the edge today but who knows what will happen tomorrow. This thread is to premature.

shaq was fat.

shaq had his best years at the age dwight is now. we'll see if dwight's are ahead of him.

Shaq totally collapsed defenses at a way Dwight hasn't been able to yet (Howard definitely alters the opposing D, but anybody who followed Shaq back in the day knows there was an open man EVERY TIME Shaq touched the ball because of the doubles/triples he would draw). Shaq also had a way of checking his man while providing help D at the same time. His passing ability was FAR AND AWAY better than Dwights. I love Howards game, but this isn't really that close at all.

As much as I hate the arrogant SOB named Shaq and As much as I love D12, I would have to say Shaq is better... People are saying that Dwight is still young but we also have to acknowledge that Shaq was averaging 29 ppg, 13 rpg and almost 3 bpg at the age of 22... Dwight is already 23... Although his defensive and rebounding skills maybe the same as Shaq's or maybe even be a little bit better, his offense is nowhere near Shaq's caliber... We will see in the next couple of years if he can be better... I hope so... But it is no easy job...

I hope you guys realize that SHAQ wasnt in his prime for the Orlando Magic. Shaq put up 23ppg 14rpg 3.5bpg in his ROOKIE YEAR! Yall only had Shaq for four years. Shaq left around 25.

That's a reach at best.

Especially since he put up some of his best numbers.

shaq went to college, dwight came straight from high school. i'm not making an excuse but dwight went from hs talent to straight to the nba talent. shaq went to college and had the college talent so his transition into the nba was a lot easier than dwights. give dwight a couple years and he'll exceed your expectations for him

Yall are forgetting how good Shaq was in his prime. Howard is an elite player but come on, it's not even close

You are right. There aren't any good centers now-a-days. There is Bynum and dwight. Everyone else pretty much SUX!!! shaq had to go against, Ewing, Hakeem, Robinson, Motumbo, Alonzo. Right now there is Yao, Bynum, Dwight.

Now to be fair Shaq was 20 when he entered the league. Dwight was 18 so in each year played Shaq had 2 years more maturity than Dwight. Reguardless Shaq still has the superior numbers. Obviously it's to early in Howards career to be comparing the two, give Howard a few more years and we'll see where he's at. Hasn't been in the league long enough to see what Howard can do at the peak of his career. Remember Shaq didn't win his first championship till his 8th season in the league.
