KEYS TO VICTORY
Contain Thornton: Sharks alternate captain Joe Thornton has 43 points (14G-29A) in 32 career games against the Penguins. Heís arguably the best setup man in the league and if unchecked, Thornton will add to those totals against Pittsburgh. He currently leads San Jose in scoring with 58 points on 13 goals and 45 assists. His 45 helpers are third-most in the NHL (behind Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin).

Bring It: You canít make mistakes against a team as skilled and efficient as San Jose. At the same time, you canít play scared and in awe of their talents. The best defense will be the Penguins' offense. Pittsburgh will have to attack, attack, attack. As Herb Brooks once said, ďWhen you see a bear in the woods, look him in the eye and then shoot him.Ē

LOWDOWN ON THE SHARKS

The San Jose Sharks have been dominant in the past four regular seasons earning 108, 107, 99 and 104 points in the last four years, but have yet to play for a Stanley Cup. The furthest theyíve penetrated was into the Western Conference Final in 2004. After two consecutive second-round exits, general manager Doug Wilson decided the team needed a drastic recapitalization. First, he fired head coach Ron Wilson after five seasons behind the bench. Todd McLellan took over after serving three seasons as an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings. He is working with a different defensive unit than was in place last season. Wilson overhauled half of his defensive corps by dumping Brian Campbell, Matt Carle and Craig Rivet. He shuffled in Rob Blake, Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich. Itís Stanley Cup or bust for Wilson.

The moves appear to be paying off. San Jose is arguably the best team in the National Hockey League and has the results to prove it. I could fill a full this whole piece with the teamís accomplishments so Iíll stick to a few highlights. San Jose lost only twice in regulation in its first 15 games (13-2-0). The Sharks didnít lose their fifth regulation game until the month of December, going 29-4-5 to that point. The team had a nine-game winning streak and 13-game unbeaten streak during the season (12-0-1). The Sharks havenít lost back-to-back games in regulation this season. As usual, the Sharks are excelling in the regular season. However, Wilson overhauled his team to get results in the postseason. That will be the team's true measure of success.

The Sharks lost three consecutive games for the first time this year (0-1-2) heading into a battle against the Bruins Tuesday night in Boston. It was a dual between the top teams in their respective conferences, not to mention a return trip for Joe Thornton to the team that originally drafted him. San Jose won the game, 5-2, to claim its top status in the NHL and break its skid. Luckily for Pittsburgh, San Jose meets the Penguins the day after the emotional matchup in Boston. The game in Pittsburgh will be the third installment of San Joseís five-game East Coast swing (Columbus, Boston, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New Jersey).

Almost mid-way through the second period and no score yet. Good effort so far from the Guins just have to capitalize on scoring chances.

I'm sensing the effort too, the energy. Even without sound while vacuuming.

Damn! If Sykora had snapped that instead of wound up to Sunday, we'd have had sometihthing. Good way to end period. Kinda wish it was continuing, since we had some serious jump, especially from circles in and Whit doing a good job carrying the mail and gaining the zone.

1-0 guys, against #1 Western team that is on a feeding frenzy. Look at Boston. A win here speaks VOLUMES, as long as we don't blow a 3rd period lead.

We should be fairly well rested. That third-period comeback of theirs had to take something out of them.
