Reds Sign Jacque Jones, Daryle Ward

By Tim Dierkes [February 5 at 2:28pm CST]
According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, the Reds signed Jacque Jones and Daryle Ward to minor league deals today.

Jones, 34 in April, hit .147/.239/.207 in 134 plate appearances for the Tigers and Marlins last year. Jones played winter ball and had laser eye surgery this winter.

Ward, 33, hit .216/.319/.402 in 119 plate appearances for the Cubs last year. He missed time with a herniated disc.mlbtr

Both have some pop---maybe in they heydays-- but insurance will help... i like Ward off the bench, hes def an asset

Neither guy should make the team. We have left handed bats, we need RH bats. Too bad Wigginton got away.

Jones is done.....useless......washed up.

Ward on the other hand (other than last year) has been a consistant pinch hitter putting out decent avg and pop. You could do worse than having him on the team.

Jones looked absolutely lost at the plate last year, i doubt he even makes the team.

These signings do not surprise me. Neither will battle for a starting job or consistent playing time. The only thing that we can hope for is that Ward is a consistent PH that can hit .270 during late inning situations.

Otherwise, way to go Walt.

jones is terrible...ward could be a decent option off the bench...probably will match at javier valentin did last year

I like the signings and it just gives more depth to the outfield and adds to the competition. The best thing for us is for there to be competition for Left field and we have at least 3 guys that could play in left field maybe more. Gomes, Hopper, Dickerson, Jones, Nix there is going to be competition which is a good thing in my oppinion. 2 of the 3 out field spots are filled and then we will need a bench off the bat Ward is good signing he can replace Valentine. I like both moves.

"He went to Mexico to work on some things," Jocketty said. "For a guy to do that with his experience in the big leagues, willing to make that sacrifice, that shows he's hungry and looking for an opportunity."

This winter, the left-handed-hitting Jones played winter ball in Mexico and batted .314 (37-for-118) with three homers, 15 RBIs and a .349 on-base percentage in 29 games.

I also like these signings...Ward is great bench player and Jones is just another option for our depleted left field. Nice signings Walt.

With the way the economy is they could have signed better players at the same price. Players like Millar, Aurilia, Anderson, Mientkiewicz...etc.
