Nelson Seriously Injured In Third Quarter Vs. Mavs

Magic all-star point guard Jameer Nelson dislocated his right shoulder playing against the Dallas Mavs on Monday night.
Nelson left the game with nine minutes, 11 seconds left in the third period, either fell or ran into Mavs center Erick Dampier. He ran off the floor in a bent-over fashion after appearing to injure his right shoulder.
He was replaced by veteran Anthony Johnson.
The Magic do not have a third point guard. They did not replace Mike Wilks after Wilks sustained a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.
Nelson was named an all-star reserve for the Eastern Conference last week, and could now miss his first career all-star game.

Tough Break. Who do you think is the leading contender to replace him in the All-Star Game (if it gets to that point)?

- D. Rose?
- R. Rondo?
- J. Calderon?

Putting Derrick Rose next to Lebron... guaranteed that Rose would kill Mo Will in every statistic.

As that is a hypothetical... Mo Williams should get the nod over Rose in the All-Start Game (if Jameer Nelson is out), and the Cavs are infinitely better than the Bulls.

Also...

I think Rose is better than Mo Will, Calderon, Rondo, and every other PG in the east except for maybe Harris.

Dont know about that. Mo help Lebron by being a 3 pt shooter. Rose would help but he would not provide that perimieter shooting a play like Lebron needs

AI and Arenas are still superstars

Arenas is injured but he'll still get 20-30 ppg and would still be clutch

And AI is having a bad year but can still put better numbers than Rose if he was put in the right position

Testaverde16

My guess is Mo Williams replaces him, just because the Cavs should really have more than 1 all star, but Calderon and Rose should get serious consideration.

Kyben36

Maybe AI gets injured too, I realy dont like that guy anymore. He seems like a guy Nobody realy wants. Is that a player that deserves the Hall of Fame. Yes, He is a good scorer, but he is a bad defender and undersized. What makes this guy any more special than Ben Gordon. OK maybe not Ben Gordon but still,

A lot of hyperbole in this thread. It's extremely unfortunate that Nelsone went down but he isn't playing "amazing" this year. If he was in the west, he wouldn't even be a top 5 PG.

am i wrong or the replacement all-star does not have to be a guard?

joe johnson and devin harris will become the two guards reserves, making nelson's replacement a player of any position (if necessary).

ORLANDO, Fla. - All-star point guard Jameer Nelson could miss the rest of the season for the Orlando Magic because of a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

An MRI exam revealed the injury Tuesday, the team announced.

Nelson will decide over the next week whether he will have surgery or attempt rehabilitation. If surgery is the option, his season is likely over. If he passes on the surgery, he'll still most likely be out at least several weeks.

Nelson left the Magic's 105-95 loss to the Mavericks on Monday night in the third quarter after he was fouled by Dallas centre Erick Dampier and hit the floor. Nelson came up bent over and clutching his right shoulder before heading to the locker-room in pain.

The injury leaves the Southeast division-leading Magic (37-11) with a major hole.

Orlando does not have a third point guard behind backup Anthony Johnson. The Magic will likely have to sign another point guard, or covert shooting guards J.J. Reddick and Courtney Lee. Magic general manager Otis Smith had a news conference scheduled for later Tuesday.

"It's a big blow for us," centre Dwight Howard said after Monday night's loss. "I'm trying not to even think about it because he had been playing so well for us. It's a sad day for us all."

Nelson was having a career season, averaging 16.7 points and 5.4 assists per game. He was selected to his first all-star game and was also slated to compete in the skills challenge on Feb. 14 in Phoenix.

The Magic host the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night.

Nelson missed five games earlier this season with a right hip injury, and Orlando managed to go 4-1 behind Johnson.

A longer stretch against significantly better competition will provide a tougher test.

"We've done it before so we'll do whatever we have to do," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.

If the Magic can take any comfort in the loss, it's that they have time to regroup before the playoffs.

Orlando has a stranglehold on the Southeast Division, beginning Tuesday with a nine-game lead over Atlanta. The Magic were three games behind Boston for the NBA's best record.

Still, Orlando's hopes for locking up home-court advantage in the East took a major hit.

"We don't change expectations at all," Lee said. "We can't say that we're losing because Jameer is out. We all have to step it up so that there's no drop off."

thats too bad but gives other teams a little hope (aka toronto)

this definitely hurts the magic quite a bit, but i'm not sure theres much hope for toronto catching us from 18 games behind with 35 to go.

anyways, if jameer can't return this season, i don't think there's any chance of orlando coming out of the east with anthony johnson as the starting pg. i'm still confident we will finish 3rd in the east, and who knows, maybe courtney lee can make a conversion to point guard. either way, my aspirations of watching us take down cleveland and/or boston in the playoffs took quite a hit.

definitely feel bad for jameer having to miss his first all star game. also have to say i respect a bunch of the laker fans for being sympathetic whereas most others are just drooling at the chance to see mo williams in the ASG.

If I'm not mistaken, Lamar Odom had the same thing happen to him a couple years ago. It was even later in the season than now. He was there for the playoffs. He opted to not have the surgery. Maybe the degree of the tear might be different, but there still is some hope.
