Mets Sign Ollie With A Three Year Deal

1:18pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Mets and Perez have agreed to terms on a three-year, $36MM deal (no fourth-year option). Sherman says the signing "all but assures" Pedro Martinez will not be re-signed. You have to figure Ben Sheets is also out.

You know the story with Perez: only 27 years old, with a strong strikeout rate but plenty of walks and home runs allowed.

12:44pm: Matthew Cerrone's sources say the Mets are "close to finalizing" a deal with Perez, perhaps for three years at no more than $12MM per. Jon Heyman terms it as "on the verge."

11:42am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are "moving closer" to signing free agent lefty Oliver Perez. The Mets hope for a three-year deal but a fourth-year vesting option "remains possible." Rosenthal says the Mets are "cautiously optimistic" about re-signing Perez. If Perez has another serious suitor, it hasn't been leaked to the public.

i dont know if he is really worth 12 mil a year, but it was a solid signing

1. He's not worth that much money, but he certainly has the potential to earn it.

2. Ollie will get better, the question is whether it will be enough to justify this contract.

3. I also feel that not playing for a contract will help a lot in 2009.

Well Boras wanted 5 years $75M... so I'll take this as a good deal lol

Not bad one bit. If the market were up, he would have gotten double that.

If only the Mets could have landed Lowe.

Makes sense. I have pretty much been waiting for this to happen.

Anyone think it will be the Mets who take the chance on Sheets that everyone wants to but no one will???

i see Texas signing Sheets... there has to be conflict in contract negotiations or another team involved in Sheets..

if no one wants to give sheets two years than something in his medical reports must be scaring off teams

Yes, I think that the money and security will clear his head and let him be able to "just pitch"

Good sign.Sheets is next for sure either Texas or Milwakuee but if Texas gets him they can also have a CHANCE in the wildcard

He's not worth it now, but he has strong potential to surpass his contract value.

I like it for the Mets. It's only 3 years if he doesn't pan out, and they got him for a lot less than what he thought he was going to get.

Mets needed Perez because Sheets was such a big question mark and a risky option.

I like it, though I do hope the Mets still make more moves, like pitching (Sheets) or hitting (Abreu/Manny/etc.)

I love the signing. We only had to go 3 years, which is really the key with someone as inconsistent as perez... if he hasnt figured it out by then we need to be rid of him. Also 12M per is absolutely nothing for a 27 yr old lefty... especially one that could be great. You have to figure that on the mets he will never be the 6.00 ERA guy again. His downside is <5.00 ERA now. He certainly still has that great upside. He showed it at times last season. In July of 08 he posted a 1.38 ERA and averaged 6.2 IP/start. Hopefully, Dan Woerthan an continue his progression.

Double, eh. I don't think he's worth a shade more than 8M per and even then that's saying something. He's got a lot of upside but I'm not certain he's going tap into that anytime soon.

this was bound to happen, but by no means does this improve the METS rotation. 12 mill. a year for an inconsistant at the very best average pitcher is absurd. Sheets would have been worth the risk and it was never reported any other team was interested in Perez.Oliver just banked becuz of the simple fact that there are no FA pitchers left without some history of baggage. If potentional pays this much i'd love to see how sports salaries would be if there was no such thing as a draft and every1 was a free agent. 18 and 21 years old getting paid off of "potential" just means mets fans are just trying to find a way to shed some light on yet another horrible decision by the front office.

Minya got played by Borass.
Perez is not worth 12 mill per year. Hes worth 8-10 at the most. Minya bidded against himself, there were no other serious potential suitors. Oh well, not my money so i could care less. However 12 million for #4 starter isn't worth it. I should know, i'm a Giants fan and get to watch Zito earn his money for doing nothing.

god damn phillies killer...

i think perez was the mets best option at this point. he may be a bit inconsistent but he has growing up to do still. i really dont look forward to seeing him face the phillies again, especially during day games...but a good signing he is worth the 12 mil a year.

Nice signing. Sheets is probably out of the question now, but I see them still going after Braden Looper or someone to soldiy their rotation even more. Maybe even Randy Wolf...

Qua?

He was asking for 5/75.

If he was asking or could be had for $8M every team in baseball would of been after him.

He is not a #4 starter... on the Mets he'll be a #3 and probably one of the best number 3's in the game.

I think I'd rather have Perez 3/36 then Lowe 4/60. Nice job by Omar here.

I have Oliver at 2 WAR, which is valued at 3/$27. They didn't overpay by a long stretch, but they still overpaid. Okay deal.

I really liked the original 3/30, but I think they came to a happy medium to keep it at 3 years and no 4th year option.

#4 starter?
compared to what many other pitchers get, this is a good bargain.

he is coming into his prime(27 years old), and has been much more than a #4 over the last 3 years. averaging over 180 IP, and a sub 4 ERA during that time.

P.S. im very sorry for all you grumpy fans who got stuck with extremely worse deals and pitchers like barry zito.
