View Full Version : Best Teams to never win a Championship

There have been a lot of great teams in the NBA, but not all have won rings. Here are a few off the top of my head and why I think they didn't make it.

- Cwebb's Kings - This team was the Phoenix Suns of the early 2000's. All Finesse and no heart/toughness except bibby. Time and time again LA bullied them and they backed down.

- Ewing's Knicks - With one of the greatest centers off all time they still couldn't get over the hump. They chocked in game 7 against houston. But John Starks till this day is the guy you I have HUGE respect for because he was NOT afraid of Jordan like everybody else was.

- Barkley Suns - This team was amazing but just couldnt get past MJ. Somebody needed to check steve kerr! lol

- Nash's Suns - This team was a remake of the old Cwebb Kings. All finesse and no toughness as we saw with their constant losing to SA. The Suns were better as far as talent, but as we all know talent dosent win games, TEAMS win games.

- Chauncey's Pistons - First off I know they won a ring, but to me this team was one of the best teams we have seen in a long time. Everyone knew their role and truly played as ONE. They went to all those finals and only won once. To me they severely underachieved, and for that they will never get the props they truly deserve.

what you think? Can you think of any other teams?

Agree they were one of the best to not win it.

But that's a horrible assessment. No heart? That's ridiculous. What they lacked in toughness, they made up for with heart.

You must not be a big NBA fan.... Malone and Stockton were never able to get over the hump.

I think kings fans will agree they were robbed out of a trip to the finals in 2002 based on the Refs calling fouls in favor of the Lakers to force a game 7. IMo Kings were the better team....

Winning in '85 and '87 you would have to assume the '86 team still had to be good.

How about that Rockets team with Drexler / Barkley / Hakeem?

That was the team I wanted to play badly in the finals. Man I wanted to play them.

I was to young to remember who won. I didnt google it or anything i was just thinking off the top of my head. Plus living in Canada back in those days, we didnt get to many NBA games... to be exact the only games we got on cable were NBC's on sunday afternoon.

I agree that the Malone/Stockton Jazz were the best to never win, followed closely by Webber's Kings. But, there's another team that could recieve some props, even if they weren't the best. The Kidd-Era Nets.

Sonics won 60+ games on 3 occasions and the Jazz have won 60+ games on two occasions. Dallas has won 60+ on 3 occasions this decade and the Suns twice.

When you win 60+ games you are definitely a contender.

Heck when you start winning 56 games you are a contender.

Stockton/Malone - Jazz
Payton/Kemp - Sonics
Pippen/Wallace/Sabonis - Blazers
Webber/Peja - Kings

I say the Kings of the early 2000s. Their starting lineup was amazing and they had a pretty good bench as well.

The best team to never win is BY FAR the 2000 Blazers. They were ridiculously stacked at every position, and they're team was basically an allstar team, and a great coach in Dunleavy.

Damon Stoudamire
Steve Smith
Scottie Pippen
Rasheed Wallace (in his prime)
Arvydas Sabonis

and a bench consisting of only

Gregg Anthony
Bonzi Wells
Detlef Shrempf
Brian Grant
Jermaine Oneal

That team was just sick. A close second is the CWebb/Bibby/Peja Kings. That team was also pretty stacked.

PS- Isn't it great to know that the mighty Lakers took out BOTH of those squads? I LOVE LA!!!!

The only player on that Blazers team that was in their prime was Rasheed. Everyone else was on the downside of their career.

That's a move all Kings fans regret (myself included).

They should've never put him in the expansion draft.

I have only followed basketball since 2006 so I havent got so much knowledge before that.. However, the 2005 Heat were pretty good. They would probably have won it that year if it wasnt for shaq and wade injuries vs the Pistons

I dont think they were THE best, but I think the 2004 Timberwolves should be added into the discussion, since most agree that with Sam Cassell healthy, they would have been the favorites to win it all that year.

The Bulls from 70-75, who won 50 games a season, had a 3-2 lead over Golden State in the Conference Finals in '75, and lost the next 2. They had 2 great forwards in Bob Love and Chet Walker, 2 all defensive team guards in Norm Van Lier and Jerry Sloan, along with Tom Boerwinkle and Nate Thurmond at center. Initially they couldn't get past the Lakers.
