What problems do you see with your teams?

offense... we'll still be towards the bottom of the league in runs. And even though we improved our pen, there's still some question marks there.

Rangers, lets not state the obvious of pitching, rather I fear the trade market has seemed stingy over the last year or so, and we will not get the full value of our prospects left over after the major league clubs fills out.

Cubs - overall offense.

A lot of players had spikes in their numbers last year vs. their careers- Fontenot, Aramis' walk total, Bradley and Theriot. Don't know if those guys are going to keep it up. Soto had an excellent rookie season, but is he for real or just a guy who had one really amazing season? Can Fukudome get back to 1st half Fukudome or is 2nd half Fukudome? Lee - was it the first season in a decline or an off season?

We have not added anyone to a horrible bullpen. As of now, we are banking on Fernando Rodney to be our closer. If that is not a fear/problem, I don't know what is. It gose beyond closer though as Zumaya is a health risk and has to prove he has the makeup of a late inning pitcher. There is not one guy in the pen that I have ANY confidence in.

Mets-lack of a number 2 pitcher, our managers somehow allowing david wright and jose reyes to play 160 games leading to fatigue down the stretch, castillo being alive, lack of clutchness from our hitters.

long ball
01-19-2009, 09:57 PM
Brewers- Starting Rotation. Can field an average rotation at best but has little to zero depth behind those 5. I like what they've done with the BP. The lack of players that get on base makes them nearly solely reliant on the long ball.

Re-signing Ben Sheets would ease my frustration with the rotation for the most part.

That they aren't spending nearly enough money.

whitesoxfan83
01-19-2009, 10:04 PM
wow...where to begin.

1 Starting Pitching- Mark Buehrle- the most consistent and underrated pitcher in baseball. then...john danks, will he be able to sustain his 2008 success? Gavin Floyd, was his post ASB 4.80ERA the real gavin floyd? what are we going to do with the 4 and 5 spots now that javy and contreras are gone? are we really depending on bartolo colon to hold down the 4 spot? the same colon who hasnt been healthy since 2005? and even then was hurt for the 2005 postseason...and who is the 5th guy? Lance Broadway? Jeff Marquez? Clayton Richard? im not confident with any of those options..

2 Offense screwed in more ways than 1

A) we have too many slap hitting smallball players who are giant question marks for 2008 and who basically all play the same positions, Brian Anderson CF, Jerry Owens CF, Chris Getz 2B-SS, Jayson Nix 2B-SS, Brent Lillibridge SS, and you could say wilson betemit...

B) we at the same time have too many power hitters that clog up the smallball type of offense that the white sox are trying to construct. if you would have told me at the end of 2008 that jim thome, paul konerko, jermaine dye, and josh fields would all be in the lineup come 2009 i woulda called you crazy

3 the bullpen

we tried trading jenks...then wouldnt talk extension with him, his k rate has dropped and his control hasnt gotten much better, plus his WHIP jumped in 2008. Matt Thornton was amazing in 2008 but garbage in 2007, which thronton is showing up in 2009? Scott linebrink is another year older. Octavio Dotel is still injury prone.

4 Defense

Josh Fields is no Joe Crede/Juan Uribe
Alexei Ramirez is no Orlando Cabrera
Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and AJ Pierzynski are all a year older.

nothing seems right with the white sox, but then again this happens every offseason.

last season it was whether or not danks and floyd could hold down the 4 and 5 spots. or if alexei ramirez and carlos quentin were actually everyday players. or if scott linebrink was going to get shelled moving from san diego to the cell? finally was dotel going to stay healthy?

with the white sox its usually the things you wouldnt consider to be problems that end up being problems, in 2008 it was Nick Swisher and Javy Vazquez.

if that remains the case then im guessing this years nick swisher could be carlos quentin, im still holding my breath that his wrist injury didnt do any permanment damage and even if it didnt, im still waiting for him to stay healthy for an entire season.

Health of the Red Sox.

Lot of "if's". Smoltz, Penny, Saito, Ortiz, Lowell are all concerns coming into the season. Hopefully some of those will be answered the way I want, but you know that not ALL of these guys will prove to be great signings.

Mets- Lack of balls and leadership. Santana showed he had balls but unforunately he couldnt pitch 30 complete games last year. Delgado carried the team while everyone else kinda watched and said wow. I hope whatever team that Minaya finally puts out there and doesnt put any additional pressure on themselves, forget the last two seasons( also the 2006 nlcs, F-U yadier molina) and just play the way that there supposed to. Whether its the Nationals or the Phillies. Dont play down to the competition. Stay at the ssame level and good things (hopefully)will happen.

Health of Ortiz and Lowell and Drew. I hope that Penny comes back to his old self.

Marlins - rotation is the strongest (although that wasn't the question . . .)

2 biggest issues for me are the bullpen - up & down young guns. Some stronger and more legit than others. But young closer (Lindstrom), young set-up guy (Nunez), young everybody else (Kensing, Tucker, Ceda, etc.). We really missed out by not being able to re-sign Rhodes . . .

The other issue for me, but less so as a fan/homer is the line-up. Our strongest 3 batters are Hanley, Uggla, & Cantu. Everybody else is question marks on how well they can perform over the whole season (Maybin, Hermida, Ross, Baker, & Gaby Sanchez).
I would like to see the Fish sign Adam Dunn.

Can Beckett return to 07 form
Can Dice-K repeat last year
Can Lester repeat last year
Will Ellsbury turn into the leadoff man the Sox need
Was Youks year a fluke
Will Lowell be healthy
Will Ortiz be healthy and get back on top
Can Drew... nervermind I know that wont happen
Catching, although I believe if Tek is back, he cant possibly be any worst then last year at the plate

But unlike the majority, Lowrie dosent bother as long as the catcher position is ateast average. If the team can score 900+ runs, I think theyll be in good shape, with a starting rotation that has tons of potential and a revamped bullpen. But Ill admit their tons of question marks with this team

Adding a big bat would be better for every team in the MLB. Doesn't really answer the original question

As a Twins fan I constantly see players over achieve. It's fun during the season but it scares the crap out of me during the off season. We let Hunter walk then Span comes in and has a MUCH better season than the man he was replacing. Blackburn comes up through the minors and pitches better than Hughes, Kennedy, and C. Buchholz. I'm not saying it will always be like this but it is surprising none the less.

Every off season I look at the 'over achievers' and get scared shitless they won't play like that again next year. Then the next year comes and if they don't step up someone else does. It's fun to watch, don't get me wrong, but it makes for a scary offseason considering how quiet it is.

my biggest fear is that the young guys dont develop/continue to develop (Kendrick, Morales, Santana, Wood, Arredondo, Aybar, Napoli, Jepsen, Weaver, Adenhart)

and if Morales and Wood dont develop then are biggest problem is the need for a bat

Dodgers:

- Lack of starters
- Matt Kemp continues to swing at bad pitches

- Juan Pierre starts/plays, taking time away from Either

Mets- The 2nd base situation is horrible. I still cant understand why Omar give Castillo a long term deal, it makes me literally sick. Starting Pitching. Johan has no help at the top of the rotation. John Maine is a big ?..Well Pelf have another good season?...I think so, but you never know. Offense..Man, so many question marks its sad. Delgado will not a have another monster year. Well Church bounce back after the head truma? Castillo, The Catcher`s situation. The Tatis/ Murphy situation. My team is in bad shape.
