There was a thread on the Phillies board, I thought I would open it into a poll.

There is a lot of great talent in the NL East. It is very close between Hanley, Wright, and Utley

Its close, but Hanley Ramirez has a slight edge over Utley and Wright, IMO.

Ryan Howard

Really? Sure, he is probably the best pure power hitter in the NL East, but he is no where near overall talent wise with Hanley, Utley, or Wright. Those 3 players play good defense, hit for average, get on base, and are good around the bases, in addition to hitting for good power. IMO, Howard is not a top player in this league until he improves his overall game.

Hanley is definitely the best SS in the whole Majors. Period. The guy hits for power, contact, has super speed and exceptional defense. I don't see him as a SS for much longer though. Guy is like the size of a LB. I'm a Mets fan btw so no Reyes bias here.

Wow, Beltran?

Theres no way that Beltran is the better overall player then Utley is, specially at this point in his career.

Hell, I dont even think he's the 1st best player on the Mets, or even farther, the 2nd best player on the Mets. Wright and Reyes are both better in my opinion.

Anyhoww.. I'd go as said before.

1. Hanley
2. Utley

3. Wright

Hmmmmm

Beltran plays a more prime position than either Wright or Utley and he is arguably the best center fielder in the game defensevly and all around.

On offense he compares to Chase Utley and Wright, he is a better base runner and base stealer than both.

Beltran is the best player on the Mets period and he is one of the best all around players in baseball period.

Hanley has improved alot on his defense for me to say he is a great all around player as well, not just offensively.

Thats why is a toss up between both of them imo.

No am basing this mostly off of last year, obviously the guy you want for the long run is Hanley since he is only 24 and then maybe Wright since he is 26.

Beltran and Utley are both going to be 30+ come next season, so they would fall back on the list.

Sick Of It All
01-01-2009, 08:22 PM

I guess we are all assuming it's only position players.

I'm surprised by the few people naming Beltran. I'm totally naming him in the next underrated player thread.

No, we dont like him but that doesnt mean anything, he isnt better than rollins and is the 6th best player at the most. Rollins actually knows how to play defense and is a better clubhouse guy and doesnt throw his glove down on a bad play

ritz

How do you know he's a better clubhouse guy? Teammates seem to love Reyes. I don't agree with him getting pissed off and throwing his glove, but he was mad at himself for making a ****** throw, not at Delgado.

i should have said a bad leader instead of a bad clubhouse guy. if the mets had a couple guys who are good leaders than they would be in the playoffs instead of choking in september

Right, well I'm not going to turn this thread to **** by arguing with you over something so dumb. There's one guy I think should lead the team and he hasn't stepped up. I think he will when Delgado is gone.

Oh, and it's not Jose Reyes either.

I think Wright and beltran need to step up but they dont lead so imo, if those 2 guys would lead the mets would have been in the playoffs 2 years ago and possibly this past year.

viktor06

I'll go with :

1) Utley
2) Hanley
3) Chipper

4) Beltran
5) Wright

6) Reyes
7) Rollins

Assuiming Chipper plays 150 games, declines a bit, Utley, Hanley and Wright remain the same and SS is more valuable than 2B/CF which is more valuable than 3B.

Ah, yeah, if Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes had given Scott Schoneweis, then maybe he wouldn't have sucked ***, along with the rest of the bullpen.

That's why he was horrible. Not because he wasn't already not very good, and because, due to it being late in the season, his arm might have been a bit tired, but because Beltran didn't step up...

Yeah. That's it....:sigh:

Jose Reyes might not have a glove of the caliber of Rollins', but he certainly knows how to play defense.

From 2006 to 2008, plus/minus has him as the 7th best SS in baseball, with a +27.

As for UZR, every season of his career he's been worth at least .5 wins with the glove, with the one exception being last season, when he was below average at -1.5 runs.

Think before you post. Please.

You could just as easily simplify Jimmy Rollins, considering over the past 4 seasons, Rollins has been only slightly better.

Reyes (weighted) WAR- 4.98 (call it 5)
Rollins (weighted) WAR- 5.2

Rollins has been better by an unimpressive .2 wins.....

That's even taking Reyes first full major league season into account, when he was nowhere the player he's been the past few season. It's alright, though. No one is expecting you to know what you're talking about, or provide any sort of intelligence, for that matter.

** Not to mention, Fangraphs, which is the site that carries the WAR values I used, does not park adjust for it's offensive numbers (wRAA, which is based off of a non-park adjusted wOBA). We all know about CBP, too. Not mention Shea is a pitcher's park, too.

Well Reyes speed wins us alot of games.

Example i believe it was in 2007 tim linecum vs oliver perez 12innings (not sure exact how long) Reyes forced Armando to balk twice once to seconed and then once from thrid to home, to tie the game and let delgado hit the next one gone for a homerun.

Reyes gets into the minds of pitchers and catchers which means the number two guy will see lots of fastballs since you tend to not throw your slower pitches when u have a fast guy on base.

Im NOT saying reyes is the best but he def is up there.

metfan4life775
01-03-2009, 01:36 AM
Also there is Raul Ibanez and Delgado

this says nothing to do with age or who you rather have for the next so ever years
Delgado was an MVP canidate last year and he doesnt make the list. . .

I don't think one example of one the stupid**** pitchers in the game makes you a good player. (Not saying that Reyes isn't)

Gotta say Hanley, always consistent and puts up great stats in every category, every season. He really can't be beat. But also if we are talking about "play makers" we should also mention Jorge Cantu. He is a big time clutch performer for Florida and gets barely any credit. He's so fun to watch and I'm glad the Fish aren't getting rid of him this season.
