The 30th is the season opener for Purdue against Illinois at home! I'll be there, third row seats in the student section. Should be a good game, and we'll find out if Illinois is for real.

Hmmm...I think I would. Terms? I'll let you pick them since we've got the home court advantage in the game .

Illinois should be undefeated...they lost that game against Clemson by themselves. Anyways, if Legion can contribute a solid amount from the bench Illinois will be in good shape....but if Mechaum and Mccamey keep shooting the way they are its not really going to matter.

McCamey will defiantly be the X-Factor for us in that game. In some games he comes out and plays like an absolute stud (like he did in the Missouri game), but in other games, he doesn't show up for us, and he doesn't give maximum effort. If he plays hard for us, I have no doubt he'll have a good game. If he doesn't, we could be in trouble.

ya I agree. Also though i think its the same with Mike Tisdale. He dominates against the crappy schools but struggles against the better teams. He dropped 25 tonight and if he could put up 10+ a game then Illinois could go up against most of the teams in the Big 10. I can't wait until they play Purdue in a few days.

Sounds like Jajuan Johnson. Destroys cupcake teams and sucks against an actual team.

I can't wait for the game either

If there's anybody still asking the question "Is Illinois for real?" you could stop asking that right now. With wins on the road against Vandy, #25 Missouri (This game wasn't even close), and now #11 Purdue, this team is clearly legitimate. How Illinois wasn't ranked prior to this game was beyond me (Considering we where ranked #7 in the RPI) but that doesn't matter. Illinois should be comfortably in the Top 25, when next weeks polls come out.

And by the way, Illinois basketball, we're back! :D

He's absolutely sucked his past 3 games. I don't know what his deal is...he can't seem to hit the three as well this year, but what his real problem is hes not attempting to drive to the bucket. Hes a pretty strong kid and hes definitely got the height. Purdue doesn't have anyone that can step up against a decent team.

Hummel didnt look so good when Davis threw his s**t late in the second half.

While Hummel didn't have the greatest offensive game, he also didn't shoot the ball much. 3-7 isn't an awful percentage. He had 11 or so rebounds, a block, and a steal. The worst player of that game was Keaton Grant. I swear to god if Painter doesn't bench his *** all of next game, I will be pissed. He was 3-13 with FOUR MISSED LAYUPS. How the **** do you miss FOUR LAYUPS? Also 0-3 from 3pt and 2-5 free throw. Talk about a terrible game. I don't know what happened to him, last year he was the team MVP while having a knee injury...now he's healthy and sucks.

Purdue pulling out a win, even at home, against Wisconsin would be a huge confidence booster for this team. I just hope Kramer and Hummel can play, but I have my doubts about Hummel. Apparently his back is pretty jacked up.

Maybe I'm being an optimist, but does anyone else feel like the team with 4-5 losses will take the Big 10 this year? This conference is considerably stronger than last year, where the 2 loss team took the conference.

mkool65
01-10-2009, 03:26 AM
I completely agree. I highly doubt anyone gets through conference play with less than 3 losses. If MSU keeps playing like they have lately I think there is a shot, but that is a very biased opinion.

Go ILLINI

illini has the best fg% in the big ten

its amazing just there whole team just has improved and is amazing

now we face Michigan again and hopefully we beat them this time. if we beat them we have to be top 20 in rankings

cuz we beat purdue which was 9 and then michigan which is 24

cuz BC beat number one and went from not ranked to 17 and then lost 2 straight since then

illini already has as many wins in only 16 games this year and only has 13 wins total last year. amazing turn around

like a Miami Dolphins turnaround!!!!! from 1-15 to 11-5 and illini 13-19 or whatever to 14-2 and is on a streak has had 2 6 game winning streaks

I was extremely satisfied with almost every aspect of that game, more so than any other game this season, except for Davidson. E'twaun Moore was 1 for 12 though, which really worries me. Your back court pressure killed us in the first half and we were able to adjust. That was as bad as I have seen MSU play this year and the refs were trying to give you that game. Illinois is a very good team and is definately deserving of a top 25 rating.

ya, some calls were suspect, like the shot clock violation and then illinois getting the ball...i dont know what was up with that even though they said with the whistle call. But your d stepped up towards the end shutting us down, but i still think Illinois choked down the stretch. Also they should be top 25 but they will get screwed like how they have been before and will probably be a 30-35 team. Good game though and i like MSU and Tom Izzo...hes a great coach.

Terrible? I say the Big Ten is one of the toughest conferences from top to bottom in the country. Indiana and maybe Northwestern are the only games you can say "gimme". Nothing's a given and it's a hard-fought battle every night. I don't know how you get terrible out of that.

The big ten always makes noise in the tournament and I think we will this year to. We were like 5-7 or something in the Big Ten/ ACC challenge and probably should have won it. Top to bottom the only deeper conference is the Big East. ACC has more top teams but no where near the depth.

This comment makes no sense...

The fact that there aren't 2 or 3 dominant teams in the Big 10 shows that the conference is actually very good overall. If you look at the out of conference games played for most of these teams, they're pretty impressive.

Yeah we have a pretty favorable schedule coming up. Next game I'd be somewhat concerned about would be Minnesota. @Purdue/Wisconsin won't be a fun combo.

1/21 NU 6:30 PM
1/25 @ OHST 3:45 PM
1/29 @ IOWA 7:05 PM
2/01 PSU 12:00 PM
2/04 MINN 8:30 PM
2/07 IU 4:00 PM
2/10 @ MICH 7:00 PM
2/17 @ PU 7:00 PM

3/08 PU TBA

@ OSU is never easy, PSU always plays us tough, Minny is overrated but will not be an easy game by any means, @ Mich is never a given because you need to spot them at least 15 points for the refs, and then @ Purdue is tough, The only game I would not pick us in though is @ Ill. We should have no more than 2 losses in the Big Ten this year and we will be favored in every game from here on until the NCAA tournament. If we win out we will have a #1 seed.

Hey man, look back at my post a few pages back. I said in the Big Ten even a game against NU is not a given. Then again I did just gaurantee a win tonight not long ago but NU has been playing great basketball the last couple of weeks and it was just not in the cards for us tonight. Some of the shots they were hitting were absolutely crazy, I have never seen shooting like they had down the stretch. Time to bounce back against OSU, we are still in the driver's seat MSU.

Purdue is getting beat up like crazy. First Jackson getting leveled by Krabbenhoft (concussion, did not play today), then Kramer gets his nose broken by Harris. On top of that, Hummel is still struggling with back spasms.

I'm still bothered by how bad Illinois played in Minnesota. At least they won today, but that blowout in Minny is discouraging since they have 3 of their next 4 on the road and the home game against Purdue won't be easy either.

I know the Big Ten doesn't get much pub b/c it's not as good as the Big East or ACC, but it's pretty solid top to bottom this year. Not every year Penn St. and Northwestern go into MSU and win.

Great game tonight, now we know we can play without Morgan so we better start rolling now. Hopefully Raymar will be back soon.

Even though that game last night was just a win at home, it showed so much more. It's very clear that MSU is easily the strongest team in the Big 10, and it will most likely take an undefeated run for anyone to pass them.

It is impressive that they did that without Raymar Morgan, but I'd like to add an opinion on that topic. I think Morgan is a great basketball player, but probably a bit overrated. Some analysts had him on their All American team preseason; he's definitely not deserving of that. Also, while it is a big hit for MSU to not have him on the floor (even if it's for rebounding and strength alone), I think MSU has enough depth where it shouldn't affect their game too much. Purdue, on the other hand, is lost without Hummel. He is our leading rebounder at 6'8" and is the only one (save maybe Kramer) who has enough strength to drive to the basket and take hits.

LivingThroughMe

Some news about Purdue, if anyone is interested: Hummel has a stress fracture in one of his vertebrates of his back. He does NOT have back spasms, even though that's what it was covered up as earlier. Painter said he will only play every other game at best, and it will be a game time decision at that.

Personally, I think Purdue should concede the big ten title loss and get Hummel healthy for the tournament. We are a different team with him, and even if we have a crappy seed, we can upset with him healthy. Also, if that's not a possibility, I do not want us to risk further injury on such a class act guy who has always been team above individual. I would personally feel awful if he ended his career and possibly affected the rest of his life just so we could win a few basketball games.

I completely agree that by the majority of people he is over rated but he did have one of the highest shooting percentages in the nation and is an under-rated defender. It was very nice for us to have the ability to swith from a big to small line-up just by switching him from the 4 to the 3. The good thing about his time out is that it has allowed Durrell Summers to emerge as a prolific scorer. We play you on the 17th, hopefully by then Raymar and Hummell are back to full strength.

Hummel will not be 100%, and won't be until next year. We can only hope that he at least plays, because he's better than anyone on our bench at 60-70%. He has a cracked vertebrate, which will only heal if he doesn't play for a few months.

Morgan and Hummel are eerily similar in size and PPG/RPG. I can't stress enough how envious I am of the MSU bench though. You guys have some sick players that would probably be playing 20+ minutes on a team like Purdue, but are playing much less on MSU. (Mainly Roe and Gray)

Yeah we have some nice depth

Starters: Suton, Roe, Morgan, Walton, Lucas
Backups: Ibok, Gray, Green, Summers, Allen, Lucious
Scrubs aka White Guys: Herzog, Crandall, Thornton, Kebler, Dahlman

I'm worried about our size next year though when we lose Suton/Gray/Ibok. We're bringing in two 6'11" guys but I'm not sure they'll contribute much.

We're for real. The first time the Illini beat us, it was an extremely close game that quite honestly could have went either way (a free throw would have meant a 'W' for Purdue), and the second game was without Hummel, who after this game against MSU, is clearly a huge factor for our team's chemistry.

This is probably one of the best defensive games by Purdue all year. I was at the game and was extremely impressed with all the steals and forced turnovers we had. It also helped that Grant finally hit a few three's and Jackson surprisingly created a lot of offense in addition to his always excellent defense. One of my favorite plays was when he turned on the afterburners and blew by whoever was guarding him (one of MSU's interchangeable guards...Allen, Summers, Walton, Lucas, whoever the hell...).

EDIT: I don't think you can play any better defense than this: Purdue forced 22 turnovers, blocked eight shots and held Michigan State to 33 percent shooting.

I agree that you guys played very well, especially on defense but you do have to admit that the shooting percentage should have been higher, we missed at least 5 lay-ups and many wide-open jumpers. Purdue played under control and inspired basketball last night, I think the Big Ten will come down to MSU vs Purdue, at the Breslin on senior day. Hopefully after this game Izzo realizes that Allen is not ready to play against top competition and starts giving Allen's minutes to Summers. Having Raymar back and being at home should make the next matchup much more interesting.

Ohio State probably worries me the most, since they really layed the hurt on us in our first meeting. We kept up with them the whole game, but they just could not stop making baskets.

Northwestern is also one of those teams who can beat anyone, any night. Purdue barely pulled off a win against them the first time.

I'm not really worried about Michigan. Purdue beat them pretty convincingly, although they did not have Harris most of the 2nd half.

Anyways, this could turn out to be a really exciting race to the finish. I love how MSU is scheduled against us as the last game of the year, I hope it turns out to have something to do with the title.

UM is a COMPLETELY different team at home, for starters.

They need wins very badly at this point...and Harris will play the whole game.

3 of UM's 7 losses in the Big 10 came at home this year. I don't know where you get that they're a completely different team at home...

I understand where you're coming from, but do you honestly think Harris would have exploded for 18 points in the 2nd half with the way he was held down in the first half (5 pts on 2-7 shooting)? You can go ahead and tell me he has the capability to, because he's shown that, but he's also had some games in single digits too, and that one was shaping out to be the same.

I will admit I forgot about Novak being out. I'm not saying UM will be a cakewalk, they're a very good team. The only cakewalk ahead is IU :). I'm just saying I'm not worried about them because OSU and NU worry me much more.

Purdue has been excellent at shutting down "star player" teams this year, when healthy (examples: Curry, Griffin, Battle, etc). The only exceptions I see to this are the 1st PSU game (Battle had 22pts I think), but both Kramer and Hummel did not play. The other is maybe Rice having 17pts in our win against BC.

I have felt that way all along. They are the most fundamental "team". Painter does an incredible job getting his kids to play as one "unit". I really admire them.

Some of Kramer's comments were pretty goofy after the first game, but he is just that kind of kid, I guess.

I imagine the second contest will be a lot different, for both teams. Neither team could throw it in the ocean and both teams played horribly in the first half. Purdue adjusted and started to really expose the undermanned UM squad.

I expect both teams to shoot much better in AA, and the game will probably be played in the 60's or 70's. The game is important to both teams, but on "senior night" in AA, I expect the team/crowd to be very pumped.

I think it will be a 4-5 point game, either way. Also, it is important to note that the home teams have gotten HUGE benefits from officiating this year in the Big Ten. Maybe I am losing my mind, but every BT game I watch, it is incredible how big of an advantage it is.

I remember watching Indiana at home in the 80's and 90's and it was not even fair.....but these days every home team is getting a big break from the zebra's....

I agree I really like how Painter coaches. This team is so much better than our record indicates. To be quite honest, if you exclude injuries and bad refereeing, we should only have 1 loss (Duke). Oklahoma was blown by the refs, and our other losses were with injuries. Of course, not everyone will agree with that, but I definitely think we had the potential to be a 1 loss team up to now.

I thought Purdue got screwed on a few home games this year by the refs, but there were more that were the opposite.

In a disheartening turn of events for Purdue basketball, Robbie Hummel's back problems have come to a head once again.

After playing the past two games, the Boilermaker sophomore forward and Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year has discovered via further examination that the fracture in the L5 vertebra has worsened, and thus, his availability for the rest of the season - beginning with Saturday's game against Indiana - is unknown.

Huge second half for MSU today, especially with 40+ football recruits on hand and celebrating the '79 team. We needed to have a game like that against a team who has been hot lately. Hopefully Chris Allen starts to find his stroke now.

No. Painter and Hummel have both said those claims are false. His back has not worsened. Hummel coming off the bench doesn't really mean anything, since he's been day to day since he came back. Plus, why start him against IU?

Horrible loss by UM.....

Up 4 points with under a minute to go. Iowa drives and UM fouls them....Gatens hits both..to cut it to 2. UM runs the clock down to 25 seconds and Harris drives to the hoop, but cannot finish....Iowa gets the rebound and Sims gets called for a very questionable foul. Gatens hits both FT and the game is tied.

UM has a terrible last trip and game goes to OT. Harris is benched for some unknown reason for the entire OT????? He was not injured....but he was benched.

Probably the nail in the coffin for UM...barring a strong finish in the final 3 games.

They are not dead....but they are in deep, deep trouble.

I think MSU is the best in the Big Ten, and they are set up to make the biggest run in March. They are the deepest team in the Big Ten and they handle everyone on the boards. Big game when they play Purdue on 3/8, should be a good one, should be for the Big Ten Title

We can only hope. You know you'll get 110% from both teams if that's the case, and it would be an awesome game.

Somebody's gotta lose in PU vs. MSU. Couple that with the fact that both those teams have atleast 2 potential trap games and the Illini (going 3-0 to close out) own any tiebreakers, I'm feelin' optimistic.

Exactly...I don't know how you can state that as fact. Like I said before, Illinois has to hope for losses to win. MSU and PU just have to win their games.

I'm stating it as "fact" in the sense that I'm confident if Illinois goes 3-0, whichever team loses the MSU/PU game will also lose ONE of their other 3 remaining games. That's all that we need, owning the tiebreakers over both teams.

The truth is you have to hope for losses and also score more than 33 pts in your rematch vs PSU

I guess you can hope for anything. It's pretty unlikely though.

Hopefully the Illini can score more than 33 against MSU at home.

The problem with years team is this they occasionally don't come to play for games they know aren't very big, such as the PSU game you just mentioned. All the prime matchups though, they've more than shown up for, including Clemson, Mizz, MSU, and both PU games.

Our last 3 are all prime matchups. I'm confident.

It would be our records against the next highest finisher, which will be Purdue. MSU can't hope for better than 1-1 while the Illini are already 2-0.

True story, I was just looking at that. You are definitely correct based on your situation, I just don't think it will happen.

I'm not quite sure who I want to root for in the MSU/Illinois game. If Illinois wins, MSU may "mentally" have more to play for in the MSU/PU game, since if they lose, they will get no share of the title. If they go into the game knowing they at least get a share of the title, they may "mentally" not show up quite as much. Just speculation though, I am obviously not a basketball player.

Right, but what I'm saying is, if MSU beats Illinois, then when they play Purdue they are automatically Big 10 champs, no matter the outcome (they share if they lose, but they still have it).

Michigan's season is pretty much on the line tonight.

With the way they have played on the road, it is unlikely they will do any better than 1-1 at Minny and Wisconsin.

A win tonight keep's UM in the discussion.....for the time being. A loss would put them at 7-9....and essentially force them to win both road games or go deep in the BTT....

"Must win" is thrown around alot....but tonight is just that.

Believe me, we want the title outright. Walton has been talking about it all year and it was the first goal heading into the season. I think we will be playing much loser against Purdue if we beat Illinois, if we lose we could be very uptight and I would be nervous as hell for that game.

Whoever gets the 1 seed in the conference tourney assures themselves of not having to play both of the other 2 real contenders is the conference. Meaning, they could play 1, but won't have to go through both. That's really what I'd be focused on, not so much winning the conference outright. I guess in a sense they're one in the same, just win games - the rest handles itself.
