BEIJING (AFP) - Former NBA bad boy Bonzi Wells scored 48 points and snared 11 rebounds in his Chinese league debut, helping the Shanxi Zhongyu to a 107-106 win over Tianjin.

Wells shot 17-37 from the floor, including 5-15 three-pointers, and had seven steals in Sunday's game, giving his new club a glimpse of how the 10-year NBA veteran can help them in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) season.

"I was really nervous before the game and I was only thinking about turning my nerves into energy," Wells said through a Chinese translator.

"I never thought that today I would score 48 points," he said. "That is not my normal style."

Wells averaged 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in his NBA career, spent with Memphis, Sacramento, Houston and the Portland Trail Blazers -- who became known as the "Jail Blazers" for their frequent run-ins with the law.

In Shanxi, he is teaming up with former NBA coach Bob Weiss, hoping to boost Shanxi's chances of escaping their last-place finish in the 2007-2008 season.

Shanxi is currently in seventh place (9-7) but Wells is expected to turn the club into one of the CBA's elite.

Wells played 45 minutes on Sunday night. Last season, each team's two foreign players were only allowed to play a total of 60 minutes a game, but this year both foreigners can play the entire game.

Besides Wells, four-year NBA guard Kirk Snyder, former Indiana center David Harrison and one-time Golden State Warrior Chris Porter are just a few of several Americans playing in China.

remember that in the Chinese league games are 48 minutes, whereas in Europe they're only 40...

well guards in China are notorious for being bad. i remember there was an international competition where Yao got mad at China's guards because they can't even bring the ball up pass the half court line...to get the ball pass the half court line, they had to pass the ball to Yao at half court than Yao would pass it to the other side.

Wells thrills in Chinese basketball television debut

BEIJING (AFP) - In his Chinese television debut, former NBA guard Bonzi Wells helped take Shanxi Zhongyu to the brink of a come-from-behind win only to fall to the Beijing Ducks 93-92 in the last second.

Wells scored five points and had a key assist and steal in the final minute as Shanxi overcame a five point deficit to take the lead 92-91 with five seconds left.

But Duck guard Jie Libin hit a baseline winner with 0.6 seconds on the clock as the home crowd went wild.

The former NBA badboy scored 41 points in the game late Wednesday, had nine rebounds, six assists and five steals, but only made 16 of 37 shot attempts, including one of 11 three pointers.

"I shot the ball way too much. I need to avoid so much individual play and pass the ball more," a disappointed Wells said after the match, according to the Chinese translation.

The 10-year National Basketball Association veteran has been touted as the best player from the world's top league to play in the Chinese Basketball Association.

He scored 48 points in his debut match on Sunday, a 107-106 win over Tianjin.

"What were you expecting from me? No one can play a perfect game every time," Wells told the gathered press that has followed his every move since arriving in China two weeks ago.

Wells averaged 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds in his NBA career, spent with Memphis, Sacramento, Houston and the Portland Trail Blazers.

But it is his nearly two years playing with China's iconic centre Yao Ming on the Houston Rockets that has endeared him to Chinese fans.

Besides Wells, two other former teammates of Yao in the NBA are playing in the China's professional league this season and both are among the league's top scorers.

Texas native Mike Harris, playing for Dongguan Leopards, is leading the league in scoring with 32.3 points a game after 17 matches, while Kirk Snyder is putting up 29.8 points a night for Zhejiang Wanma.

I don't understand why no NBA team signed him this year. He's better than some players that play significant minutes for a few of the top NBA teams nevermind the crappy teams. Are you telling me he's not better than half of the Thunder's roster? I can't figure that out.

Basketball bad boy Wells notches 52 in China win
Source: Yahoo! Eurosport UK (http://eurosport.yahoo.com/29122008/3/basketball-bad-boy-wells-notches-52-china-win.html)

BEIJING (AFP) - Former NBA bad boy Bonzi Wells scored 52 points and hauled in 14 rebounds as he continued his spectacular start in Chinese basketball's top league, leading Shanxi Zhongyu to an overtime victory.

Wells scored 13 of his team's 18 overtime points to seal victory over Fujian SBS on Sunday night, wowing a sell-out crowd of 6,000 in his home debut in the Chinese Basketball Association and fourth game overall.

Since arriving this month, Wells has averaged a league-leading 46.8 points a game and the Chinese press has hailed him as a "scoring machine" and the best former NBA player to grace the CBA.

"The coach is giving me a lot of space, in the NBA I was never able to play so freely," Wells, 32, said after Sunday's game through a Chinese translator.

"Since college until now, it has been a long time since I've been able to play this freely."

Shanxi is currently in 10th place in the CBA at 10-9, having won two and lost two with Wells in the line-up.

For much of Sunday, Shanxi's former NBA coach Bob Weiss had Wells playing at point guard and not his usual shooting guard or forward position, resulting in the 10-year NBA veteran also dishing out five assists on the night.

TAIYUAN, West China, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Shanxi Zhongyu had terminated contract with Bonzi Wells as the former Houston Rockets player refused to return to China after a holiday break.

The CBA club released an announcement on Jan. 31, one day before the re-open of the domestic basketball league after a seven-day break during the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Players of Shanxi were ordered to return for training on Jan. 27. Wells, who went back to the United States, postponed his returning date several times before he failed to make a league match on Sunday.

"We had booked a return flight on Jan. 27 and postponed it to Jan. 29 due to a request from Mr. Wells. However, Mr. Wells didn't return on schedule for a match against Changchun Dacheng," the announcement said.

Shanxi lost 110-89 at home to Changchun and fell to the eighth placing on the standings.

Wells joined Shanxi on Dec. 12 and played his first CBA match on Dec. 21 against Tianjin Ronggang, when he had 48 points, 11 rebounds and seven steals in a 107-106 victory.

The former NBA player averaged 34.3 points ln 14 matches, which Shanxi won half of them

Source: Yahoo! Eurosport (UK) (http://eurosport.yahoo.com/02022009/3/china-basketball-club-sacks-bad-boy-bonzi-wells-official.html)

BEIJING (AFP) - Chinese basketball team Shanxi Zhongyu has sacked superstar import Bonzi Wells after the former NBA bad boy failed to return from a holiday in his native United States, his club said Monday.

Wells, 32, dubbed by the local media the best player to have ever graced the Chinese Basketball Association after joining Zhongyu in December, had his contract terminated late last week, an employee at the club told AFP.

"He should have come back to the club on January 30, but he did not," said the man, who declined to be named.

According to a statement posted on Zhongyu's website over the weekend, Wells -- who was dogged by troublesome on-court behaviour and run-ins with coaches during his 10-year NBA career -- went home for a holiday last month.

He was meant to come back on January 27, but asked for a two-day extension to "attend to some personal matters," the statement said.

On January 29, he asked for another extension, which the club agreed to as long as he came back in time for a weekend match.

Wells, however, still failed to return, prompting the cancellation of his one-year contract.

"After friendly talks between the club and Wells and his agents, we unanimously agreed to terminate the contract," the statement said.

Wells admitted in earlier comments to finding it difficult in China, despite averaging 34 points in his 14 games with Zhongyu.

"It was a big cultural shock to me for the first few weeks," he said.

"Since I have been here it has been all business and I haven't had any fun yet, so I am looking for some fun."

Wells had helped lift Zhongyu, who finished last in season 2007-2008, into the top half of the CBA league.

But, in an ominous sign, they got thumped 89-110 by 10th-placed Changchun on Sunday without Wells.

Apart from playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the United States, Wells is famous in China because he played alongside the nation's iconic centre Yao Ming with the Houston Rockets.

"It is Bonzi's preference to finish the season in Europe, and we are reviewing some opportunities for him," BDA Sports told The Star Press in a Monday evening e-mail.....
