BOSTON--Dikembe Mutombo is going after this harder than he has ever gone after a block or a dunk or a rebound.

Much, much harder.

The 7-2 free agent center who helped the 76ers reach the NBA Finals in 2000-01, and who says ''I will be in Boston or San Antonio by the end of the year,''

Good pick up for either team. 4 defensive player of the year awards is always a good thing. I think it'll be San Antonio though, Boston seems happy with Perkins/Big Baby Davis

I think the lakers should go after him, he's definitely an upgrade over Chris Mihm and could teach Bynum so old defensive tricks

He would fit in perfectly with the Spurs.

Give it a rest. Dikembe Mutombo is one of the finest people in the NBA. He's done a lot of work for disadvantaged people, and if he wants to sign somewhere other than Houston, he doesn't owe the Rockets anything.

To all the people saying the Lakers should pursue him, I've wanted that all off-season. I really don't understand why we wouldn't want him. We've already got one of the best ever offensive centers teaching Bynum the game, having one of the best ever defensive centers here could really help turn Bynum into something special.

Deke could still come in and give us some good defense under the basket as well.

Rockets organisation asked him not to retire so they could sign him. He doesn't retire and they don't even contact him! What a disrespect to Jean-Jacques!

Am I missing something? How would being a Spur taint his legacy? Are they the steroids of basketball?

Why do you say that?

Not quite to the same degree, but it would be somewhat akin to John Elway joining the Raiders for his final season. It would just be wrong.

I see him ending up in Boston.

I see it from his perspective. Deke is a proud guy who stepped in for Yao when he was injured and did a great job. In his mind he earned a reasonable pay day. The problem is Adelman is an offensive coach and Deke does not fit with what he wants, IMO. I would love to have Deke back, but a man gotta to do what a man gotta do. Besides he wants to win a ring and Celtics and Spurs have a better chance at it than the rockets at this point.

One of my fav players of all-time. I'd love to see him get a ring in Boston. He deserves it.

I think it's different than that. I mean Elway had a hall of fame career, all with the Broncos. However, Mutombo has only spent a few years with the Rockets, and definately not his best years there.

Boston definitly needs Mutumbo. After perkins, you got powe, davis, and o'bryant for bigs.

Powe and davis are both extremely undersized, Davis also is out with injury, and is having a not so great year all together. And powe is not a center. We also have o'bryant, but id much rather have Deke coming in to backup perk than him. Our bench would be..

House/Pruitt
Allen
Scal
powe/davis
Deke/obryant

Im just wondering who they will cut/trade to make room for him. Since we are at max roster limit

Except that I'm a Nuggets fan, and the single best moment in Nuggets history between the 80s and now was our 1st round upset of the Sonics led by Mutombo. He remains very high on a lot of Nuggets fans' lists of all time favorite players.

He's going to Boston. And will block Kobe's layup in the last seconds of the Finals. He will end his career with a finger wave:

If he's smart and really wants to win a championship then he should definitely sign with Boston because I really can't see any team beating them. They are scary good.

I know there is nothing I can do about it, but I am sick and tired of players not having to put enough energy into the game. They won't show up if they're traded to a bad team, and even Mutombo isn't in good enough health to play a whole season, so why should he get to play for a championship?

Mutombo is a great guy, humanitarian, and philanthropist, but really it just doesn't seem fair. It is a downward spiral where the players control the league, instead of the opposite.

I dont know about San Antonio but if he was to sign with Boston he would actually have a significant impact on our squad imo. Like many have already mentioned Are only backup bigs are 2 PFs. O'Bryant doesnt play because im guessing Doc believes he sucks. Deke would get good backup minutes behind Perk and would fit into our defense first philosophy real well. He can still block and alter shots and pull down boards. Plus he can only be a plus for the young Kendrick Perkins. I mean without Deke i believe the C's are repeating. But adding him would only be a plus and a bonus.Id love to see the finger wave in beantown.

Our backup bigs are Oberto/KT...but Oberto is injured, and hasnt been playing that much to begin with. I think he would get some time, but personally I think he is going to go to Boston.
