Many athletes say it's all about winning. Dirk Nowitzki may be willing to put his money where his mouth is.

The Dallas Morning News reported on Monday that the Mavericks star would consider taking less money in 2010 so Dallas could sign a free agent from what looks like a promising class.

"Every team is trying to be a player in 2010," Nowitzki said, according to the newspaper. "Every team is trying to clear money under the cap so they can make a move. I'm very fortunate that I've made a lot of money in this league, even though I've never really played for money. I love the sport. I love this organization. Obviously, I want to win. I won the MVP, and individually, there's nothing really left but winning a championship.

"If that means I have to play for less money, it's all possible. It's all open."

Nowitzki can exercise an option after the 2009-10 season and make $21.5 million the following year, or he can become an unrestricted free agent. The Mavericks could then sign him to a new contract that lowers his 2010-11 salary to bring a complementary player on board.

That would be great for the moves and a good move for Dirk. He already got millions and now is doing his best to get more help to win a ring.

If more people we like Dirk, many more teams would be championship contenders.

We'll see how serious he is when that time comes, players say this all the time but rarely is it enough and sometimes it can bite the player in the ***. Still though I believe Dirk and if he takes a 5-6M Paycut then he may get the help he needs. Then again if it wasnt about the money why would you ever want to be paid 20M? Its hard for teams to sustain or establish success when they are paying 1 guy so much.

It's possible. He's talking in 2008, and it sounds nice and all, but when it comes time to sign for less a year and half from now, will he really? I doubt it.

He could pull an Elton Brand.

Thats Dirks character. He has always been about winning. He makes alot because thats what he is offered as a MVP player, but he can take less. This wouldnt surprise me in the least bit.

I mean every summer in between the seasons all he does is go home and play for the German National Team or go work with his personal mentor and coach Holger Geschwindner to broaden his game. Thats why he has improved by leaps and bounds as a defender, as a passer, and his shot selection is so much better than it use to be.

The guy wants to win, and he wants to do it as a Maverick. He is very loyal to the organization. They took a chance on him before there ever a "Dirk Nowitzki" type player in the NBA.

Dont do it Dirk! It's a trap, you're not winning anything with that team!

^ Because he wants more money? I can't fault him.

Dirk isn't going to do it anyway. If it happens that he becomes a FA in 2010 he'll be shocked by the amount people will offer him, he'll at least want that to be matched at Dallas.

Dirk is not the first player to take a pay cut, Duncan was the first when he signed a contract for the spurs till 2012. He did so because he wanted to give the spurs the opportunity to get decent free agent players so the spurs could still be contenders in the league.

As far as I know, Shaq also did the same thing when he signed a contract with Miami.
