"BEIJING (AP)—NBA player Yi Jianlian is being investigated by a Chinese-language magazine which claims he is one of many of the country’s athletes guilty of lying about their age on official documents.

Yi, who plays for the New Jersey Nets, has long been reported in the Chinese media to be older than his records show. Earlier this month, China’s Sports Ministry reported that it found 36 players in China’s professional basketball league whose dates of birth may have been changed.

The December issue of the Chinese-language edition of Sports Illustrated said a reporter for the magazine found records from Yi’s middle-school registration in his hometown in southern China that said he was born in 1984.

His official basketball records say he was born in 1987. He is also listed by the Nets as being born Oct. 27, 1987."

it only says he is 3 years older... i dont see what the big deal is.

That is 3 less years the Nets or whoever has him can get out of him.

I wouldn't be to happy if I drafted him and he was older than they thought, not a HUGE deal though.

BREAKING NEWS: Yao is 54 and Yi is 42. China has disowned them.

Lol. Not a big deal but I wouldn't want to be kiki right now.

breaking news: Greg Oden is 45 years old :jumpy:

I thought Greg was 55?

Any way, he lied about his age so that he is worth more. Imagine if Kobe said he was 17 now? Imagine how much he would improve (where in reality he's in his prime)? That's an extreme case.

Definitely could make the case that there's less room for potential growth 3 years older. Wish I could have lied about my age I would have gotten more play time haha

Age is a big deal in any sport. You use it to measure a player's potential and longevity in the NBA. In some cases it's even important because a player may not be done growing yet.

isnt this like week old news?

it's literally as old as since Yi's been in the league. There have been investigations surrounding his age since he started playing, and there's no proof yet.

It's certainly possible but there is absolutely zero substantial evidence, and until then color me a skeptic.
