The Bucks drafted the guy based on potential, a difference of 3 years changes that outlook exponentially. Anyone else think this is a big deal? The Nets are probably making millions off of him so they dont care.

You mean Bucks? But he should be kicked out of the league for this. Teams put so much money into these players and to be lied too is just awful.

um....he wasn't drafted by the raptors.

Fixed it, that wouldve been alot worse, I always mix up Yi and Bargs. But yea its not as bad now that I think of it because hes probably making the Nets alot of money but still sucks for the Bucks.

That's a pretty scumbag thing to do. I don't think it should have any monumental concequences though.

Why would they lie about it? I'm just wondering...

Would you rather draft a 20 year old rookie...or a 23 year old rookie?

Higher value/draft pick perhaps

Yao is secretly 35.

Yi would get more money because teams would like his upside more. A 21 year old is a lot more appealing than a 24 year old, especially for a team looking to rebuild.

Not if he is really 24 instead of 21. How can he get more years in the league by saying he is younger?

srry, it makes them THINK you have more years in the league, therefore more likely to draft you

Since he was a high draft pick your assuming he can stay in the league for say 15 years since he was "21". So that assumes he is basically done when he is 36. That would only give him 12 years since he is actually already 24.

If he were to become nice nice, this could have a significant impact on his next contract.

Either way, he has less leeway as far as his development.

This speculation has been going on since Yi was in the league... This isn't really credible evidence. This doesn't really show anything except a document and a picture taped onto it, which could have been done by anyone.

Color me skeptical but I'm far from convinced.

as the information he gave is technically fraud, the league probably give the team an option to cut his contract without having to pay the rest. also a fine on the amount of money he has been paid up until now (payable mainly to the bucks). hes making the nets too much money and nba trying to keep the asian market highly interested so nothing but a slap on the wrist will be done imo

He should not be allowed to compete in the all star game if he gets voted in. lol.

no news here, its highly possible that yue and ming are 2 or three years older too.

and it was always rumoured that african players were older that they said, specifically Hakeem, Bol and Mutombo, maybe deng too.

wow if Mutombo lied....how old is he? 50????? and still in the league last year.

Yao is actually 47, thats why he's injured so much

Technically, we don't know if it was actually Yi that was lying... He may have been lied to about his DOB, it happens a lot. Hell outside of Fidel, I don't think anyone knows how old Jose Contreras is.

12-19-2008, 08:27 PM
how old is he really

29$JerZ
12-19-2008, 08:30 PM
He lied about his age because a 21 yr old big man with a mid range game has a lot of potential compared to a 24 yr old who only has 6 years in him and probably won't get any better as he is now.

Bucks lucky they got him out for RJ.

Why? What do they have in common besides being Chinese? Yao has been nothing but honest and upstanding in his long, successful NBA career.

Yao didn't claim to be 19....or 18.....he came to the NBA at age 20 and he was gonna be the first pick no matter how old he was....

Yeah and the Bucks ditched him fast....the Nets must have heard the questions about his age which has been rumored to be 84 since he was drafted....

SCUMBAG? r u serious u have no clue what his purpose was... what if he needed money for his family and lied so he can have the ability to make Mad money in the pros... boxers and fighters do it all the time. who the **** cares, it sux but bucks dont even have him, and they got rid of him as if he was 21. no one knew until recently, so it kinda sucks for the nets but theyll get rid of him b4 b4 10 years so it wont really matta

Never getting out of the first round and being injury plagued is successful?

AntiG

the only thing that should happen is that the contract money terms get invalidated, the team still has full rights to him over the course of the contract and the player then must renegotiate the money terms. the team then has leverage to lower the contract cost.

I wouldn't say questioning Yao's age is racist as much as it is somewhat reasonably distrustful of a corrupt Chinese government that has time and again used its resources to cheat in sporting events.

This happens with players in baseball (mainly Cubans) all of the time. And I don't think the baseball team's can really do anything about it. If I where the Nets, I wouldn't be THAT upset. Sure Yi lied about his age, but I'm sure he's leading the team in jersey sales, and that means they're (Nets) making a TON of money off him.

Can anyone actually read what this says?

Using my (very) limited Japanese skillz (and Japanese writing is derivative of Chinese writing), I was able to track this (http://tinyurl.com/a963gk)down, so the characters next to "1984.10.27" definitely mean "date of birth".
