Astros selected LHP Gil de la Vara from the Royals with the 13th pick in the Rule 5 draft.

A year after taking and keeping Wesley Wright, the Astros grab themselves another lefty reliever in the Rule 5. De la Vara had a 3.27 ERA in 77 innings between Single-A Wilimington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. He lacks Wright's pure stuff, but he does have better command.

The astros bullpen is great, but the rotation is a mess.
Don't you think they should have gone after a starter?

they could used the "take the best player available" strategy, rather than drafting out of need.

maybe this sets up a potential trade from our BP?

also a reliever is wasier to hide than a starter, youve got 7 guys in the bullpen, and you dont even have to pitch him if you want while still keeping him on the major league roster

Could Byrdak be not tendered?

It's very rare that you find a quality starter in the Rule 5 Draft.

I couldn't agree more! It would be pointless to draft a starter who we would have to keep on the 25 man roster all season or return him. I would only draft a starter if they used him out of the bull-pen for the first year then moved him to the rotation the next.

I think the Astros made solid choices and a trade today.

I think it is a string possiblity because you don't need three left handed specialists. I don't knwo what Byrdak was making, but I thought he pitched fairly well for us.

I would have rather gotten Chris Nicoll who has been more effective in his K/9 and BB/9 at every level of the minors... but I guess its not a big deal either way.
