LOS ANGELES - The Suns acquired dynamic shooting guard Jason Richardson today in a trade with the Charlotte Bobcats that will also bring second-year forward Jared Dudley and a 2010 second-round draft choice to the Suns in exchange for shooting guard Raja Bell, forward Boris Diaw and rookie point guard Sean Singletary.

The deal, pending players passing physicals, brings a new dimension to the Suns' shooting guard position with Richardson, who can hit 3-pointers and be an athletic fit into an uptempo system like he starred in during five seasons with Golden State. The trade call was completed at about 3:45 p.m. Phoenix time today.

"He's athletic and gives us a really potent offensive player," Suns General Manager Steve Kerr said. "He's also an excellent defensive players and he's in his prime. He's a very high-character guy and well-regarded around the league for his professionalism."

Richardson, who turns 28 next month, is a 6-foot-6, 225-pound former two-time slam dunk contest champion who has a season scoring average (18.7) that is in line with his career scoring average (18.8).

Richardson has hit 45.8 percent of his 3-pointers this season and is a good rebounder for a guard, pulling down 4.1 on average this season. The former 2001 No.5 draft pick was moved to Charlotte in a financially driven trade in 2005 but is best known for being the mature captain of the Warriors, who broke a 13-year playoff drought in his final season there.

Richardson makes $12,222,222 this season, $13,333,333 next season and $14,444,444 in 2010-11. Diaw was under contract for $9 million per season through 2011-12. Bell is making $5 million this season and gets $5.25 million next season in his contract's final year.

Dudley, 23, was Charlotte's 2007 first-round pick at No. 22 in 2007 and has started seven of the Bobcats' games this season. He is a 6-foot-7, 225-pound small forward who plays more like a power forward with court savvy and a strong work ethic. He is averaging 5.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 0.9 steals this season in 21.4 minutes per game.

"I'm high on Dudley," Kerr said. "He's versatile and can guard multiple positions and play like a small four (power forward) or a big three (small forward)."

Dudley is on his rookie deal that pays him $1,222,320 this season, $1,307,640 next season and carries a team option for $2,151,068 in 2010-11.

Bell, 32, was averaging 9.6 points this season, his lowest average since he was with Dallas in 2002-03. Bell, in his fourth year as the Suns' starting shooting guard, is having a good 3-point shooting season at 46.8 percent but is only shooting 42.9 percent overall. The bigger problem was that he had been disgruntled with the early changes that new coach Terry Porter brought and how they affected his role and the team since the start of training camp. He was vocal about his discomfort in and out of the public eye.

Bell, considered the "heart and soul" of the team by Mike D'Antoni in past seasons, enjoyed the best seasons of his career with the Suns. He became a full-time starter for the first time in Phoenix and fired up more than 400 3-point attempts in each of his first three seasons. He was named to the NBA All-Defensive first team for 2006-07 and the All-Defensive second team for last season.

Diaw, 26, was also in his fourth season with the Suns but was posting his lowest averages for points (8.3), rebounds (3.8), assists (2.1) and minutes (24.5). He does have career-best shooting percentages from the field (56.7 percent) and 3-point line (35.7 percent).

I think adding Diaw to Mek will be a major upgrade for them.
Bell will be a good defender for them too and Singletary can play.
I have a feeling Felton is next. Then move up DJ to starting PG and allow Singletary to come off the bench.

That's one way to look at it. Kind of hope thats what happens. If they start Felon at the 2....that's not a good idea.

As of now I'd like to see this lineup...

Felton/Bell/Wallace/Diaw/Okafor

Bye bye Felton. I like J-Rich, but I'm not real sure he fit Larry Brown's style and I'd rather lose him than Wallace. I guess we're packing it in for another year. :sigh:

I don't really see the value of Singletary long term, however, unless they invision him as a combo guard who could effectively start at the #2.

This is the dumbest trade of the season. I hope PHX dominates all year and JRich puts down 30 a night. The Bobcats are a dead franchise, and its that simple. No one is as exciting, and they simply won't sell tickets. It'll be a matter of years before their gone again. If Jordan throws on a uniform, thats when they'll sell out.

You are kidding, right? J-Rich isn't going to work in Phoenix, he needs to dominate the ball and he won't because he's got Nash, Amare, and Shaq around him. Just shut up and go away.

How can you come here and make fun of a team using a Jordan reference even though YOUR team hasn't done a DAMN thing since Jordan left!!! Perhaps Jordan should put back on a Bulls uniform eh?. Go ahead, say some dumb "WE drafted Rose and have a bright future" comment. Would be nice if you guys actually keep your 1st round picks and not trade it away AGAIN.(Aldridge,Crawford,Brand,Artest to name a few). If anything, YOU as a Bulls fan should feel embarrassed that your All Time best player, the guy Bulls fan love and adore has made the Bobcats a "dead franchise". That's YOUR BOY LOL. Oh, and I'm a Heat fan not Bobcats. Feel free to attempt to convince me that Wade is going to Chicago because he grew up there. Guess Amare will be going to Orlando since he grew up there too right? For a team who has fans that are always confident, funny how last year the chants of Kobe Kobe Kobe were heard in your HOME stadium. Way to show your team support. If you're going to come here to talk smack, make sense please.

This probably wont be a popular trade among bobcats fans, but im going to look at it positively. Bell hasnt been a "lockdown" defender this year like he was in the past, but i think brown will be able to motivate him to return to previous form. Bell can also shoot the 3 effectively. Diaw is pretty young and i think he will have more opportunities with the bobcats than he did in phoenix. Sure we are losing our best scorer, but this will open up more opportunities for the rest of the team to step up and be good scorers. DJ went for 28 and 7 assists tonight and ajinca got into double figures. i think ppl will be suprised at how well this trade works out.

I CANT stand ignorant Bulls fans. And im a Knicks fan. You know whats a dumber trade. Refusing to give up Deng/Gordon for Kobe. Now thats ********.
They swear they getting Wade when they going to be over the cap. Yall have long-term contracts locked up, but yall getting Wade in free agency. Yeah right.

And without Derrick Rose, the Bulls wouldnt be exciting either.

How many long term contracts do you think the Knicks have left? Gallinari's got the longest contract, and he's cheap. Obviously you forgot about the trades they made earlier this year. Almost all of their contracts are gone after the 09/10 season.

Even trade for all, I think the hidden jewel in this deal is that PHX gets Dudley who was beginning to appear on my radar.

I think that can be a solid lineup too. They will have trouble scoring which means more pressure is on Felton and DJ to create but defensively they could be a pretty good team.

Dudley could become the new "Diaw". If he does than the Suns win the trade.

The one thing about Dudley is he has pretty much 0 athleticism and is one of the slowest small forwards I have ever seen. That being said...I loved how the guy played. He's a smart player and he hustles. I really hate to see him go. I don't really mind trading J-Rich, I think he's a guy that will put up great stats, but doesn't really help you win. I can see him easily not fitting in with the Suns. Amare has already complained about not being the guy, and if you add Richardson into that, you get another guy that wants the ball in his hands. I will say this...the Suns look great on paper. But so did the Clippers going into this season.

I'm hoping that Bell and Diaw can help the Bobcats chemistry on offense and defense, which they should do. The Bobcats already have trouble scoring the ball, but hopefully Bell can spread the floor, and Diaw can take the pressure off of Felton so he doesn't have to be the main playmaker. We also desperately needed a guy like Diaw, a PF that can shoot from midrange. Sean May was that guy before this trade....I feel a lot better having Diaw there instead of May.

Yea i agree, the knicks have done really well in clearing out cap space...i never questioned that
