Also this doesn't have to be currently but just in general from over the years.

Gilbert Arenas doesn't ever really even play PG, so SG for him.

You should add Al Horford in here- he seems to do much better as a PF than at C.

I think for a lot of these guys, its not just the position, but also, in what capacity they're playing (like for LO, is he the starting SF, and a 4th or 5th option?, or is he the 6th man facilitating the show off the bench) also what style they're playing. If you're running a run and gun style offense like the suns did/knicks do, amare and randolph are fine at C, but if you're running a more traditional half court set offense, they don't.

AK is actually a PF, and some people reckon we have ruined him making him play sf as he has to play further away from the rim and develop a jump shot...though I think he would be no good as a pf in Jerry's system anyway

Pierce is arguably the second best SF in the game. He's played fantastic since the C's got Ray to play the 2

Sure, you can argue that. Then you can remember a guy named Dwayne Wade, or you can think back to two years ago when Pierce didn't get anything done. It took a former Celtic trading away his franchise to make Pierce look good. After all, two hall of famers will make almost anyone look good.

As for the question at hand, I'll just discuss the players I know, Gasol and Odom.

Gasol seems to fit at the four (PF) so well. At 7', with an even greater wing span, he's a match up nightmare for almost any PF, and with his 12-15 foot jumper, he does well to move away from the hoop, but he also has great post moves (like his baby hook) that work well agaisnt PF's. When a center is in there, sometimes he gets pushed around too much to finish. He plays well at the five, but is just too natural at the four to argue anything else.
Oh, and his defense isn't too shabby either. He was shutting down Amare, Dirk, and Bosh when he covered them, they were all bothered by his lenght.

Odom- This one's tough, it really depends on who's on the other side. He's too fast and nimble for most PFs to cover, and too long for SFs. He can create a match up problem most anywhere. He can be a bit undersized for some of the taller and stronger PFs, and maybe a step slow for some of the quicker SFs, but it hasn't been too evident, especially since he shut players like Marion down.

82 games has great by-position stats that offer a lot of insight into this question.

Both Amare (http://www.82games.com/0809/08PHO10.HTM#bypos) and Gasol (http://www.82games.com/0809/08LAL11.HTM#bypos), if you judge by their net PERs (their own PER minus their opponent's PER) play much better at the C than at the SF position.

Two guys that might go contrary to popular perception: AI (http://www.82games.com/0708/07DEN4C.HTM) and Wade (http://www.82games.com/0708/07MIA6C.HTM)both have slightly better net PERs as pgs than as sgs.

Melo (http://www.82games.com/0809/08DEN7.HTM#bypos) seems to play much better offensively at the 3, but defensively at the 4, and the net result is a better net PER as a power forward. This would confirm what I've witnessed with my own eyes which is that his interior defense is very, very solid now while his perimeter work still falls short (he still is all too often too slow to rotate out). He enjoys battling it out in the paint a lot more than he enjoys moving quickly. This also speaks well of his rebounding, where he's often pulling down boards in spite of being outsized.
