Which teams would NOT become a contender if you dropped Shaq in his prime on their current roster today?

Pretty much any team with a star would be a contender. Only teams that may not be is Oklahoma or the Kings.

That's like asking what team won't contend with LeBron or Kobe. He would dominate on any team.

I think the Bulls would be right up at the top of the list of the teams that would benefit the most, to turn your question on its head.

This isnt a KG where even past their initial development stages found ways to miss the playoffs, we're talking about a man who changed the fortunes of every team that inherited him immediately, if the definition of a contender is a team that makes the playoffs then every team with Shaq on it would be a contender. Simply said, a 20 year old Shaq made a near expansion team that couldnt win jack without him and missed the playoffs by 1 game, that was a ROOKIE Shaq. Once he got his feet wet he never missed the playoffs. Thats something the truly great players do, the twice or thrice in a decade type players. His impact in the game go beyond the numbers. the scary part is that his numbers were MASSIVE.

I don't disagree with any of this. Shaq and 4 guys from the D-League might make the playoffs. However obviously not every team with Shaq in it is a title contender and I think the question is still valid.

I thought about it myself and I believed that OKC and the Clips were the only teams in the league that wouldn't be in the title hunt with Shaq. I made the thread wondering if others had teams to add or if they thought even those teams could win it all this year with the Big Diesel.

They would have to trade Kaman and Z-Bo away but assuming you get equal value for these 2 at the wing positions you have yourself a pretty dominant team.

Ansy
12-02-2008, 07:37 AM
Chronz, that team is still far from contending with LA/Boston.

EDIT: Didn't see the blip about trying to trade Z-Bo for an equal value SG. You muddy up the question with stuff like that, let's not go there because we'll just wind up arguing about who you could get for him.

lol, Warriors will be destructive.

PG-Monta Ellis
SG-Jamal Crawford
SF-Corey Maggette

C-Shaquille O'Neal

haha, Shaq in the middle of all those guards, he'll probably average 30 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks.

There is no team in the league who wouldn't make the playoffs with Shaq in his prime IMO.

I think Memphis, even with Shaq in his prime, would have a ways to go... Gay and Mayo still not there... they would be a 7 seed with Shaq, and lottery bound without him (Tyler Hansbrough sweepstakes, here we come!!!!!!!)

Gunzito22
12-02-2008, 12:04 PM
I would go as far as saying the Knicks do not compete today even if you put Shaq and GP in their primes....

There is no team that wouldn't be at LEAST a playoff contender with Shaq from the 2000-2001 days on the team. And everybody except for probably 4 teams would be title contenders.

JordansBulls

too crowded up front. That is why they traded Webber on draft day to get Penny Hardaway.

LA Clippers
Memphis
Minnesota
Oklahoma city

so the following lineup, with Shaq from 2000, wouldn't scare you?
C-Shaq
PF- Al Jefferson
SF- Gomes
SG- Mike Miller
PG- Foye

Miller and Foye would see all the open looks they wanted, and Jefferson is a 22-10 player. I think that is a contender for sure.
