Reports: Cubs, Dempster reach four-year deal

The Cubs are expected to announce the re-signing of Ryan Dempster to a four-year contract later Tuesday.

The deal is believed to be worth at least $52 million. It's unclear if Dempster engaged in serious talks with any other teams, though the Braves were believed to be interested. It was known from the start that he wanted to remain with the Cubs. Nov. 18 - 1:38 pm et

Agreed but the market is insane. One good season and any pitcher can be making that kind of money. Seems like you've got to pay atleast $10 million a year now for a #3 type type starter. Crazy.

The recent big deals handed to absolute like crap like Carlos Silva and Javier Vazquez have skewed the pitching market, big time.

One less, pitcher who scares the hell out of me off the market. The other being your former number 2 or 3 in Burnett.

actually, this is not going to put that aside... it will actually let us concentrate more on peavy now that we got demp done.
The cubs will push harder now they have everything out of the way.
Peavy
Harden
Zambrano
Demp
Lilly

JUST PLAIN SICK

If this dempster deal is done.....do you know what the team salary is as of right now for the 09 season?

As I stated in the Blue Jays forum, this is only an indication as to what the other starting pitchers are going to get.

Hard to pinpoint, the Cubs are supposedly increasing payroll slightly in '09 and also have some salaries they're looking to dump (Marquis)

Dempster = One Year Wonder Dempster's an interesting pitcher. In '07 (I'm pulling these off of my head, they may be slightly off) he pitched in 66 games for 66.2 IP. In 4 bad games, he pitched a total of 3.2 IP and gave up half his earned runs for the year. In the other 62 combined games his ERA sat at 2.54.

Last season he simply avoided those terribly bad games until his 1 game playoff, and he was able to stay pretty consistent for the year. I would assume 1 more good year and the Cubs can sell off this contract in a trade for a steep price.

I guess for most teams it is a bad signing but the cubs do infact have the money so for them it isnt that big of a deal and probably a worthy signing especially since these pitchers get paid so much.

It wouldn't be bad for the 8 or 9 teams who had higher or similar payrolls than the Cubs this year also

NYY
DET
NYM
BOS
CWS
LAA
All had higher

LAD and SEA were within a million of the Cubs

The Cubs are in the upper third, but this idea that they have so much more money than most teams isn't true.

Reported in Chicago, 4 years, 48MM with 1MM bonus per year possibly

it really doesnt matter. the cubs wont be picked to win the series unless they just get over the hump. i dont think it is the players, i think it is just the post season aura that gets over the cubs when they make it.

You guys dont know what a rediculous contract is until you see what Burnett/Lowe will be getting, for having even worse years. Is it a bad deal. Yes. Is it a much better deal than it could have been due to baseball contracts today. Yes.

Alright, details are out

4MM signing bonus, 8MM in '09, increasing from there, 4th year is actually a player option for 14MM

not a bad deal as far as market value goes for the cubs, but expect serious regression from last season cubs fans

Dempster was good last year but I don't think hes the type of guy you wanna sign for four years...In 2-3 years I can guarantee you he will not be near an ace.

Hmm. Well, it's not an awful deal at all considering what guys like Carlos Silva are getting, but it's still technically overpaid (all players are).

Not a bad deal, I've always like Demp and see him keeping up his numbers (although not as good as this prior season), but he'll be around a 12-15 game winner with an ERA in the 3's

Which is why we signed him to a 4 year deal. He'll be 37 by the time its over, and most ballplayers are still solid around that age. Just look at Manny and what hes doing. Theres a reason we didnt sign him to a massive 6-9 year contract.

As a Reds fan, I don't care how he does, I still say he sucks.
