2008-09 All-Breakout Team: Time to step up (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=hollinger_john&page=All-Breakout-Team-081020)

J.R. Smith will be MIP, the EC will be the biggest "breakout player", and much more. Check the link.

I think for JR Smith to really shine, Iverson needs to go. They can't have three players who need the ball in their hands.

If Smith can keep his head on straight he can be an elite scorer in this league. He has already made good strides last year.

Yea Ima go with JayW on this one, if JR Smith is to reach his potential it may have to be without Iverson. One of the main reasons I feel Karl didnt play Smith was because it took away from AI's game, without AI, Smith was more of a go to guy, then again every Nugget game I saw, their best lineups seemed to be with the big3 on the perimeter. It just depends on how AI's mindset, if he really wanted to he could open up the game so much for JR, but its also on Melo.

Either way I have high expectations for JR this year, certainly worthy of the MIP but he arguably deserved it last year.

Excellent points, Chronz. They could also play small with Anthony at the PF position and Smith being a SF...but that would mean a pouting K-Mart on the bench. I'm sure glad I'm not George Karl.

The 2nd half of the season was really something special, but truth be told he did struggle in the 1st half. I think the award probably will only go to a consistently high performer all season long. I sure hope he can do that this year.

By the way, I really hope people check the whole article. There is a lot of food for thought there, a lot of projections about a lot of players.

I had a bet with my denver mate last season that Brewer will end up averaging more points than JR which he laughed at and took straight away, and then JR sneaked it right at the end of the season.

if JR got the minutes his averages should drastically improve to be a MIP candidate, but AI is still in the way.

It's not AI who's in the way, it's George Karl and his Anthony Carter love. Down with AC up with JR, it's as simple as that.

I'm honestly suprised that Karl is still the head coach

BTW, don't rule out Nene for MIP consideration, either. He's back. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXIk5iHLETQ)

If AI can run PG and put JR at the SG then Denver can be dangerous barring they play "Defense"

if bargnani rebounds and gets 6th man consideration with like a 18 6 average he could get it

Denver might win some games with their huge run and gun style but again, if they don't play defense, they will be screwed. Don't think JR really has a chance to MIP this season just because of the DEnver roster. I say NENE has a better shot at it.

i think Tyrus Thomas has a real good chance of getting MIP this season.

Agree^

But i always knew JR was a great scorer but never realized he was at Kobe's level per 48. Of course you can't always just go by per, but maybe they should let him start and give him a good 32 mpg at least. A combo of AI JR MELO at the 1,2, and 3 would be crazy scoring. I don't see why AI can't play the point. He is better as a SG but they could make it work.

If Baron Davis, Mo Williams, Ray Felton and Gilbert Arenas can be called point guards...I guess AI can too. Still not a big fan of the whole quick trigger/drive and dish game of these 'point guards'...that's something that's more common for wing scorers...I rather have an efficient point guard who just sets up the offense like he's supposed to.

Brewer and Ford, All Stars....Hahahah, I think not

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say AI and JR Smith won't be on the same team come allstar break.

The prospect of AI getting traded is highly unlikely. It's just practically impossible to come up with realistic scenarios that work out personnel-wise and salary-wise for both teams.

Can you think of even one?
