Suns coach Terry Porter tested the idea of starting Matt Barnes at small forward in place of Grant Hill, playing Barnes with the first team in the past two practices. Porter did not commit to starting Barnes Wednesday night at Atlanta but the idea has been up for debate since the summer. It is Porter's only lineup decision until he settles on an eight- or nine-man rotation in next week's final three preseason games.

"He (Barnes) and Grant have some very similar skills, as far as the ability to put the ball on the floor, run pick and rolls, space it," Porter said. "In a lot of ways, they're the same type. Matt's just a young version of Grant maybe."

This is what I expected the Suns to do and it made the most sense as well.

Matt Barnes will turn out to be the biggest steal in the offseason. I think he's getting paid like $1 mil. He'll fit in perfectly with the Suns style. Grant Hill is on his last legs.

Good luck Suns.. good luck playing a slow tempo game.

Barnes would do better than hill;)

barnes has good energy, work ethic, heart, and a decent skill set, but as a warriors fan i can say when he was given the chance to shine in nellies system he choked and turned the ball over alot. he can be a very good part of your team, but thats all he will be is a good part, not a grant hill type that is going to give you 15-20 ppg.

It'll take some of the wear and tear off Hill. Good move.

i would too. ive always liked barnes, he`s gonna do well there

The suns are in a good spot either way at the SF position. If Barnes starts, Hill is a nice player to have off the bench. And if they start Hill, Barnes is a good 6th man. Should eb a good year for the Suns.

^^ Nice pic LOL. Matt Barnes is a good player and a better player now than Grant Hill is now.

Barnes can shoot threes and take it to the hole, but for some reason he doesn't really have a mid range game and he can make some really dumb decisions, but his defense will make up for it.

i think hill should come off the bench he kind of getting up there in age he isn't wat he use to be.

This would be a good choice.

barnes plays a perfect floor game and he's a good outside shooter. i like this decision by phoenix.

Barnes most likely will start. Its puts a younger starting 5 on the floor and with hill coming off the bench gives the young guys a mentor to lead the 2nd unit.

I love the idea of Hill coming off the bench. He will be a great leader for all the younger guys. I like Barnes starting it makes the starting 5 a little bit younger! I cant wait for the season to start!

I have a feeling Barnes is gonna piss off a lot of Suns fans by not living up to expectations....

I excepted this to happen. Barnes is younger, more athletic and a better defender than hill. Hill will be a great contributor off the bench and I think his knees will benefit from coming off the bench too.

I fell in love with Barnes games 2 seasons ago during the Warriors storied playoff run. He brings hustle, passion, selflessness etc...to his team, attributes that you cannot necessarily teach. He was a great acquisition for the Suns. Hopefully he can help get Nash a ring.

Good choice, Barnes is better than Hill at this point

Grant Hill provide offense on the bench

I've always liked Matt Barnes and Hill did look old last year, I don't see why not.
