View Full Version : Projecting The Top 6 Rookies

3. Greg Oden – Portland Trail Blazers
It's pretty frustrating that after a year of NBA strength training and conditioning, Oden is still considered a rookie because he hasn't played in a game yet. That slightly unfair advantage will definitely weigh on the minds of voters, but if Oden goes above and beyond and kills it this season – like if he averages a double-double – that concern may go away relatively quickly. He's got all the tools: size, strength, stamina, and a nice set of skills as well. Oden has been named the starter over Joel Przybilla and Blazers head coach Nate McMillan expects big things out of him. Again, if Oden blows everyone's socks off, he can pull off the ROY, but he'll have to get the voters to overwhelmingly support him with a tremendous year.

2. Michael Beasley – Miami HEAT
Beasley's actual NBA debut last night against the Detroit Pistons started very strong, finishing with 16 points and six rebounds after scoring 13 in the first quarter alone. He looked quite good playing alongside HEAT stars Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion, but sort of exposed himself as an NBA small forward rather than the hybrid many thought he was. Beasley was pushed around when he tried to defend in the post and was a bit more effective on the wing. He'll get plenty of playing time and will have a lot of chances to score in the high teens every game, especially if he becomes the team's second option behind Wade. Beasley is a scorer and has that mentality; for the voters that are enamored with big scoring and rebounding averages, Beasley will definitely be on the top of the list.

1. O.J. Mayo – Memphis Grizzlies
Although Kevin Love and Michael Beasley are ready to come in and make a difference for their squad, neither is the de facto leader of their team like O.J. Mayo has quickly become. The Grizzlies' roster already boasts plenty of young talent – Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry, Javaris Crittenton, Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol – but none of them have the pressure Mayo does. Mayo has already been named the starter at his natural shooting guard spot and will undoubtedly be a focal point in the team's offense. Mayo's already been considered the team's quiet leader with his work ethic and has the skills and opportunity to really push for the Rookie of the Year award as an all-around scorer, defender, rebounder, and he should even set the table for his teammates. He'll have some help with Gay playing sidekick for him and the Grizzlies are going to really annoy teams with their youthful peskiness this season; they might not win all that many games, but they'll work hard and Mayo will keep them in gameThe award, as it stands now, is his to lose.

Mayo should slide to 5, everyone else up one spot. But I like the rankings outside that.

good for you. I will take the big slow white boy before Mayo. My preference. It was a year ago. Still is. I like players with more than one skill

pick one, and deal. We will see who has a better year. Love, or one of your picks. I think Beas wins ROY, Love and Oden are next. My opinion, I understand everyone has their own:)

I think by the end of the season Beasley will be playing at the SF spot.

Whos says??? Beasley scored 13 straight points for the Heat and 5 rebs when he was playing th PF postion, in the 1st half he was playing SF and look what happen he only scored 3 points with 1 reb. So no i dont see BEasley moving to the SF postion.

Preseason isn't important. I think Beas will be ROY, but don't base anything off preseason or summer league. At all

When all is said and done IMO these will be the best five rookies from this class.
Oden would probably slide between Beasley and Rose somewhere.

I just can't accept a skinny, slinky guy like K-Love being a top 5 rookie. He reminds of Christian Laettner...

Surprised Roko Ukic wasn't a darkhorse.

I think Mayo and beasley will have the inside track, both will have a good opportunity to play alot, I think Oden and Love will both have an impact. I also seeing Rudy Fernandez getting some attention as the season progresses, he didnt look like a rookie the other night when I watched the Blazers scrimmage.

Fernandez has plenty of experience and he really likes to take the big shot. I can see him getting 14/15ppg this yr as a backup.

I also seeing Golden states Anthony Randolph having an impact and a darkhorse in Augustine, I think he will lead all rookies in assists

Beasley will no doubt have the biggest opportunity to score the ball in Miami along side Wade. I think he will have the best numbers. I think Oden will show his defensive prowess with his stats. Then I would say, Rose, Mayo, Love, Rodriguez, Bayless will all be around the same level.

Except he is as good as Laettner as a senior at 19 years of age. Better passer. Better rebounder. Stronger. Tougher. Smarter. But yeah, the tall white thing is similar.

lol @ Kevin Love and skinny in the same sentence.

Love is a great, great basketball player. But skinny he is not.

I can agree with that list. Mayo is the most NBA - Ready with his great defense and polished offensive game.

Love at spot 4 may seem high, but he is a great passer for his size, and knows how to play down low. May not be the most athletic guy, but he is a solid, young big.
