View Full Version : Shareef Announces Retirement

Sacramento Kings’ forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim today announced his retirement from the NBA as a player due to a reoccurring knee injury.

“First of all, on behalf of the entire organization I want to thank Shareef for his contribution to the Kings and NBA both on and off the court,” said Kings’ President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. “He has had an exemplary career as a player and citizen. It is unfortunate for any productive career to be felled by injury. However, no one can ever doubt Shareef’s effort, commitment or desire to excel. It is our intention to find a new role for Shareef with the organization as he begins the next phase of his professional life.”

Abdur-Rahim enjoyed 12 seasons in the NBA with four different teams (Vancouver 1996-97 to 2000-01, Atlanta 2001-02 to 2003-04, Portland 2003-04 to 2004-05 and Sacramento 2005-06 to 2007-08), amassing career averages of 18.1 points (.452 FGs, .297 3FGs, .810 FTs), 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game through 830 outings. His most productive season, statistically, occurred during the 1998-99 campaign in Vancouver when he averaged 23.0 points (.432 FGs, .306 3FGs, .841 FTs), 7.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game through 50 contests (NBA Lockout season). The following season (1999-00), Abdur-Rahim averaged double figures in both points (20.3) and rebounds (10.1) per game, in which he played in all 82 contests for the Grizzlies.

He was a pretty damn good player back in the day. It sucks he was never part of a great team. Sad that he wasn't able to chase a ring.

nice career, very underrated player.... if he had stayed healthy his whole career, his stats would have even been sicker.

Was one of those what if players. If he could have stayed healthy and was on a contender earlier in his career he could have been something alot more special.

However, he was a great shooter, and always an underrated/underappreciated player.

I remember my first ever NBA jersey was a throwback Shareef Abdul-Rahim jersey on the Hawks around 6 years back, man that jersey was sick

Abdur-Rahim was a really talented player when he first came in the league. He was a class-act in the league.

If I'm right, he never played in a playoff game. That's too bad.

^He played in the playoffs during the 05-06 season with the Kings. But still that's only one season.

He used to be considered a franchise player and was on the olympic team. He was once a good player in his old Vancouver Grizzlies days. Until his knee injuries. :injury: But I respect his career and say that this is a honorable thing to do.

His first year with the Kings we made the playoffs.

Shareef was always the consummate professional and was even better off of the court than he was on the court. I hope the Kings bring him in as a big mans coach. Geoff Petrie said they do want to bring him back in some capacity. Here is an example of the kind of guy Shareef Abdur-Rahim is.

"Let me tell you how good Shareef is," Goodwin said. "During the lockout, everyone is preparing for what's coming. And just as players don't get paid, agents don't get paid (in a lockout). Shareef calls me and asks me, 'You OK? Is your family going to be OK? Because if not, you know you can call me.' That's the type of person he is.
"He'd call all the time and say, 'How you doing, how's your family?' A player asking an agent, 'Do you need anything?' is unheard of. He asked me that all the time."

Good career and all, but he needed to retire, to give the Kings more cap space. Now if we can only move K9, we'll be set.
