View Full Version : Who do you consider intelligent from the current NBA players?

I'm not talking smartness on the floor or basketball ability of any short. We're talking about who you think is actually smart from the people who are playing in the L right now.

IMO Kobe is most certainly up there. I also consider Vince Carter a smart person who has grown feeling uncomfortable with basketball being his only worry (which is why he's not giving it 100% anymore imo again). Others who could be added in the list are Tim Duncan, Gilbert Arenas and Shaq.

Honorable mention should go to Etan Thomas also who is a published writer and poet in case people aren't aware of that.

So what's your take on this?

Kobe, Fisher, M. Madsen, A. Foyle, Shaq (He has his Master's degree), Duncan, Bowen, T-Mac, I believe there are a lot of high IQ players.

Shane Battier. Made one B throughout high school, was given the opportunity to apply as a Rhodes scholar (which he passed on to play basketball), graduated with a 3.5 from Duke.

Grant Hill was his HS class valedictorian, had a 3.8 at Duke.

Mutombo has 2 degrees from Georgetown and speaks English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and five African languages.

Are you kidding? Shaq's master's degree, come on... His high school GPA and SAT score weren't enough to get him into LSU, finally he got a good enough score on the ACT so that they would let him in. It was just good enough that he wasn't affected by Prop 48 which would have kept him from being able to play his Freshman season.

But seriously, would you trust any of those 'intelligent' guys to do your taxes?

Why are people constantly saying Kobe. He came straight from high school and has no college education how can you say he is that intelligent. And I dont put much stock in the high school grades of jocks because we all know alot of them were passed through. Take Amare and K. G. they went straight from high school to the league because they weren't sure their test scores would be good enough for college. Amare committed to Memphis be he wasnt sure that his ACT scores wouldnt be back in time to know if he would eligible before the draft.

i'd say nash seems smart, etan thomas seems smart, TD seems pretty smart. Hill too.

but i dont really know i havent done any research.

i have to mention david robinson in here. i know he's not a current player, but the dude did get a degree in mathematics/engineering, and myself being a current engineering student who is struggling with crazy mathematics, i gotta give respect.

I was just reading an article about an NBA player who does accounting. Can't find the link though.

Gilbert Arenas handles his own contract negotiations.

Danny Granger has a Bachelors in Civil Engineering.

Adonal Foyle has a Masters in History.

Nocioni, Ginobli, Nash, Kidd, Peja, C.Paul, KG, Pierce!

I wouldn't say Kobe because he tries to do too much even if he doesnt have the touch that day! No Shaq because he's slow and cant play D without fouling and never learned how to shoot a freethrow!

No way KG is smart. I love the guy but he's dumb.

I don't know if Kobe is book smart but he does seem pretty well-spoken. As far as basic intelligence guys like Okafor, Elton Brand, Nash, and Duncan come to mind.

If you had the chance to get millions months after your 18th birthday would you pass it up that easily?

And for the record, having a high GPA or not going to college at all has nothing to do with how intelligent someone is. I'm no Kobe lover, far from it, but anyone that says he's not smart isn't being objective.

Sure thats true in some cases, but these are basketball players, not young men who dropped out in 8th grade to take care of their mother and had to learn real life by the age of 19

they are uneducated. That doesn't mean they don't understand the world, it means they don't know anything about what is taught in school, history, science, math, etc, etc. My opinion on intelligent is educated, although I will be the first to admit many of the dumbest people I have ever met as far as street knowledge are college grads

I saw a Luol Deng interview on CNN int. last night. He's clearly a really bright guy, and he's doing some fantastic charity and awareness work to benefit Sudan and the rest of Africa as well. I hadn't seen him interview before, but I was really impressed.

I think it's worth noting that the percentage of non-U.S. players being discussed in this thread is easily higher than the percentage who are in the league. Kind of interesting.

And they worked their butts off to be good enough to play in the NBA, and now their families are living lavishly.
