The consensus among many in the media when Kerr pulled the trigger on the deal for Shaq late last season was Phoenix's GM had lost his mind. And the way things started with O'Neal in the lineup, the pundits appeared to be right. However, many people seem to forget the Suns started to play better basketball in the final few weeks leading up to the playoffs. Moreover, the Suns were competitive with the San Antonio Spurs early in their first round series and had a very good chance to win each of the first two games in the Alamo City. Don't forget, the Suns suffered a devastating 117-115 loss in Game 1 in which Tim Duncan buried a three-point shot late in the game to seal the deal after Phoenix had a big lead early in the game.

Close only counts in horseshoes, hand-grenades, and nuclear war - and that's understood. But when looking at the process the Suns went through with Shaq, it's not as though there weren't signs of something starting to come together in Phoenix. The odds don't appear to be in the Suns' favor in a very competitive Western Conference, but this certainly isn't a team that can be counted out. For the Suns to win the West, Nash and Stoudemire will have to perform at an MVP level, Shaq will have to report to camp in shape and determined to get one more title, and the Suns' role players will have to be a their best. Obviously, that's a tall order. But it's also not an order that's altogether impossible, either.

This is my fav clip of the article.
It's not saying the Suns will be a force, but it explains what people forget in that we were coming together at the end of the season and it's not like we got blown out by the Spurs. The lucky TD 3 tipped the scales.
