Probable Pitchers:

Braden Looper, RHP (12-12, 4.02) (http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=131702) vs. Bronson Arroyo, RHP (14-10, 4.65) (http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=276520)

Cardinals: Can somebody please buy this guy a break? Looper is pitching as well as almost anybody in the league, but he's not getting the wins to show it. The latest example came on Wednesday, when he allowed four runs, but just one earned. Over his past 10 starts, Looper has a 2.97 ERA, and he has eight games with two earned runs or fewer. Yet he's only 3-5 in that span.

Reds: Despite saying that only his sinker was working for him, Arroyo pitched brilliantly but wasn't rewarded with a decision on Wednesday at Milwaukee. He gave up two unearned runs and five hits over seven innings with four walks and three strikeouts. Two Reds errors led to two Brewers runs while Arroyo was opposed by tough lefty CC Sabathia. Arroyo still left the game with a 3-1 lead before a two-run Brewers eighth cost him a victory in a 4-3 Cincinnati loss.

Todd Wellemeyer, RHP (12-7, 3.63) (http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=425487) vs. Aaron Harang, RHP (4-16, 4.96) (http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=421685)

Scouting Report:
Cardinals: Wellemeyer has somewhat quietly put together an excellent season, to the point where you can make a case that he's been the Cardinals' second-best starter. He's a native of Louisville, Ky., so pitching in Cincinnati brings him close to home and puts him in front of plenty of family and friends. Wellemeyer has a 2.87 ERA away from Busch Stadium, but Great American Ball Park is not your average place to pitch on the road -- mistakes get punished, so he'll have to avoid them.

Reds: On Friday at Arizona, Harang gave up one unearned run and four hits with an intentional walk and four strikeouts over seven superbly pitched innings. He was saddled with the loss in a 3-2 defeat. He's had five-straight quality starts and a 2.45 ERA in those games but just one win to show for it. Harang last faced the Cardinals on Aug. 16 and tied a career high with eight earned runs allowed over 3 1/3 innings during a 9-3 loss at Great American Ball Park.

Kyle Lohse, RHP (13-6, 3.80) (http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=346798) vs. Edinson Volquez, RHP (16-5, 3.22) (http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=450172)

Scouting Report:
Cardinals: Lohse returns from suspension, but not as quickly as he had hoped. He'll be pitching on eight full days' rest, which isn't Lohse's preference but which pitching coach Dave Duncan said might do him some good. Lohse has a 4.92 ERA over his past nine starts, though he has 41 strikeouts against 15 walks in that span. Lohse hasn't pitched at Wrigley Field this year, but he pitched brilliantly there in an April 2007 start -- eight shutout innings, 12 strikeouts and one walk.

Reds: Pitch count should be a concern for Volquez, who established his career high in each of his last two starts. On Saturday, during a 3-2 Reds win in 10 innings, the right-hander was foiled in his third attempt for a 17th victory when he gave up two earned runs and five hits over six-plus innings. He tied a season high with six walks and eight strikeouts and threw 120 pitches. Frequently showing frustration, Volquez made mistakes like issuing a four-pitch walk to pitcher Randy Johnson and hitting light hitter Augie Ojeda with an 0-2 pitch in the third inning. Volquez allowed the leadoff runner to reach in each of the first five innings.
