Nuggets Sign Weems

DENVER, Sept. 15 -- The Denver Nuggets have signed guard/forward Sonny Weems to a contract, Nuggets Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Weems was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the second round (39th overall) of the 2008 NBA Draft before being traded to Denver for a 2009 second-round draft pick. In five games for the Nuggets entry in the 2008 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas this summer, Weems averaged 9.2 ppg and 3.0 rpg in 22.2 mpg.nuggets.com (http://www.nba.com/nuggets/news/nuggets_sign_weems_091508.html)

Weems signs with Nuggets

The Nuggets signed guard Sonny Weems to a contract on Monday. Terms were not disclosed.

The Chicago Bulls selected Weems, from Arkansas, in the second round of the 2008 NBA draft. He was traded to Denver for a 2009 second-round draft pick.

In July, Weems had surgery to repair a sports hernia. He is expected to fully recover in time for the start of training camp Sept. 30.

Weems played five games for the Nuggets' Summer League team, averaging 9.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 22.2 minutes per game. denverpost (http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_10473136)

For some speculation on the terms, there's this bit from last weeks rockymountainnews (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/sep/12/nuggets-close-deal-weems/):

Rookie swingman Sonny Weems said Friday he is on the verge of signing his first Nuggets contract.

“It should be done this weekend. I’m flying to Texas today to meet with my agent,’’ said Weems, who went to San Antonio to huddle with agent Roger Montgomery.

Both Montgomery and Weems anticipate the second-round pick’s deal for next season will be for the rookie minimum of $442,114. Weems said his agent has been trying to get three years of guaranteed money, but Montomery wouldn’t discuss contract details other than the likely starting salary.

“If I had to take a stab at it, I would probably say that, with the Nuggets cost cutting, I doubt it will be beyond minimum numbers (for next season),’’ said Montgomery, who expects the contract to be finalized “in the next few days.’’

Yep, and that probably completes the roster. I still hope they give Elton Brown an invite to training camp, though, and that he exceeds expectations and makes the cut. I just really feel pretty strongly that we need one or two more big bodies as insurance.

I don't know about player comparisons, but he's athletic as hell.

Lightest Player: Mike Taylor- 166 pounds, followed by D.J. Augustin at 171.
Heaviest Player: Kentrell Gransberry- 290 pounds
Lowest Body Fat: Lester Hudson- 3.4%
Highest Body Fat: Kentrell Gransberry -17.4% body fat
Best no-step vertical: Patrick Ewing- 35 inches
Best Max-Step Vertical: O.J. Mayo- 42 inches (tied with Ewing)
Bench Press: Josh Duncan 26 reps
Fastest Lane Agility: Sonny Weems- 10.58 seconds
Fastest ¾ Court Sprint: Sonny Weems- 2.96, (Joe Alexander 2.99)

In summer league games he was focused on playing perimeter defense, and the FO made it pretty clear that's why they picked him up. Roughly speaking, I think they came to the conclusion that the Yakhouba Diawara experiment didn't pan out, and this is their next perimeter D specialist project (along with Balkman).

This one compares him to Maurice Evans:

THX for tha vids Den.

Sonny kinda reminds me of a "Poor man's" Andre Iguodala, Great leaping ability, athleticsism, energy, and defense wich is something we can never have enough of. Hopefully he'll change that ugly jumpshot and make it pretty consistant. I'm pretty excited about him now, after watching those vid's. Now let's hope good old Georgy plays him.

Yeah, what we really need to do is do a much better job at putting away teams we should be beating handily in 3rd quarters (rather than giving them chances to win in final minutes) so that guys like Nene, K-Mart, and AI can get more rest, and guys like J.R., LK, Balkman, and Weems can get more pt.

He probably won't be any more than a body on the bench ala Von Wafer or Yak, right?

WEEMS MENDING: Nuggets athletic trainer Jim Gillen said rookie Sonny Weems, who underwent sports hernia surgery July 31, will be limited when camp starts Tuesday but it won't be long before he's back to full strength.

Weems injured his groin 1 1/2 years ago. But the injury wasn't properly diagnosed until last summer.

"It's feeling good, but I haven't done any explosive jumping or full-speed running," Weems said.

Weems signed last week, calling it a three-year contract with the first year guaranteed for the minimum of $442,114. Three years at the minimum would make the deal worth $2 million.rockymountainnews (http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/sep/23/fazekas-wants-to-be-nuggets-big-man-on-campus/)
