COPENHAGEN (2014 FIBA World Championship) - Denmark coach Allan Foss admits his country is a long shot to be awarded the 2014 FIBA World Championship.

The Danes, along with Spain, France and Russia have also expressed an interest in bidding for the event.

Foss, whose team was relegated to EuroBasket Division B last year, said to FIBA: “Well, clearly it is a long shot, but it would really mean something to (improve) the knowledge of basketball in Denmark.”

Foss says the sport does not enjoy a high profile.

“Unfortunately, we are compared with handball, and a lot of people do not understand the competitive difference in the market of handball and basketball,” he said.

“I think there are 10 million people in the world playing handball, and probably around 200 million playing basketball.”

To host the most prestigious basketball competition in the world would change the perception of the sport in the country forever.

“For any nation, it would be fantastic to host the World Championship in basketball, and Denmark would not be an exception,” he said.

Spain remained one of the candidates for World Championship 2014. Country which registered fantastic successes over the past few years together with Italy, France, Denmark and China fight to host this prestigious event. On December fifth it will be know which two or three countries entered into the last stage. Five months later the name of the host country of World Championship 20014 will be announced.

Jesus Bueno, executive director of Spanish Basketball Federation, stated that Spain has strong willingness to be the host of the most prestigious basketball event, except of the Olympic Games.

'After historical success on the Olympics, our next challenge is to be the hosts of World Championship 2014. Last summer we were the hosts of Eurobasket and this year FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament was held here. We are ready for the next step', said Jesus Bueno.

Except of the above mentioned events, Spain also was the host of many European Championships of various ages.

'We already have huge experience with organizing many important events. Our infrastructure is on high level and we proved we are able to be the hosts of such big tournament', said Bueno.

As a reminder, Spain was the hosts of World Championship in 1986. Spaniards finished it as a fifth ranked team. What was maybe the most important that year, Spain organize this event on high level which helped it to popularize this sport and as we see now to became the World champion and Olympic Games silver medalists
