Edwin Jackson, RHP (11-9, 4.07) Jon Lester, LHP (13-5, 3.37)

Rays: Jackson suffered his ninth loss of the season on Wednesday night, going a season-low 3 1/3 innings and exiting with a 6-1 deficit. The right-hander was tagged by the Yankees for 10 hits and left after tossing 70 pitches, 46 for strikes. The young flamethrower is at his best when he is locating his 97-mph fastball, which sets up an array of other pitches, particularly his slider. He is 2-3 in seven starts vs. Boston with a 5.70 ERA.

Red Sox: Lester continued his dominance in 2008 against the Orioles on Tuesday. He improved his season record against Baltimore to 3-0 in four starts while harboring a 2.16 ERA. The good news for Boston and its young lefty? He's also rather strong against the Rays. Lester is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA in two starts against the leaders of the AL East.

Scott Kazmir, LHP (11-6, 2.99) Daisuke Matsuzaka, RHP (16-2, 2.88)

Rays: The Rays ace picked up his 11th win of the season on Thursday night, tossing six scoreless innings against the Yankees. Kazmir allowed just one hit, fanning seven and walking five. Despite a solid performance, Kazmir has still struggled to go deep into games. He totaled 98 pitches (56 strikes) in Thursday's game and hasn't lasted longer than six innings on the hill since his win on July 21 vs. Oakland. He is still struggling to gain control of his slider which has historically been his best pitch. Kazmir will face Boston for the third time this season, looking to earn his first victory. In 19 games, he is 6-6 with a career 3.02 ERA.

Red Sox: Matsuzaka threw 112 pitches in six innings on Wednesday against the Orioles, laboring through long at-bats and four walks and making it difficult to go deep in the ballgame with such a high pitch count. Matsuzaka is unbeaten in his past seven starts, going 5-0 with a 2.54 ERA, and has 28 strikeouts in his past 25 innings of work.

Andy Sonnanstine, RHP (13-7, 4.66) Josh Beckett, RHP (12-9, 4.20)

Rays: Sonnanstine took the loss in his last outing, on Friday against the Blue Jays. He allowed four runs on five hits over six innings. The right-hander walked one, struck out three and tossed just 80 pitches in the outing before being replaced by the bullpen. It was the right-hander's first loss since July 27 against Kansas City. In four career starts against the Red Sox, Sonnanstine is 1-1 with an 8.85 ERA.

Red Sox: In his first start since Aug. 17, when right elbow inflammation landed him on the disabled list, Beckett won for the first time since Aug. 11. More importantly, he made it through his start without any trace of pain in his elbow. The right-hander needed just 40 pitches to face the minimum through three innings and finished up with 80 pitches in five innings. He allowed only four baserunners, all on hits, and struck out seven. In three of his five innings, Beckett struck out more batters than he let on base. He'll next face the Rays in the last game of a three-game series in Boston. In three starts against Tampa Bay this season, Beckett is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 23 strikeouts, against two walks.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that B.J. Upton (quadriceps) "likely won't return to the lineup until Friday in New York at the earliest."

Upton said Tuesday that his injured quadriceps felt better and he could be available as a pinch-hitter Wednesday.

Great win yesterday. Now were 2 and 1/2 up. Next series could hurt us since the Yankees are the one team we don't go well against.
