After the addition of Jermaine O'Neal, a top defensive big man when healthy. Chris Bosh's realization of his defensive potential after the Olympics. Jamario Moon's athletic ability and constantly altering shots. Anthony Parker is a solid defender. Also with a defensive minded coach like Sam Mitchell, I believe this team is going to have a complete overhaul when it comes to defensive strategy.

Not in the whole NBA at all. They are #3 in the Atlantic division IMO, so I don't know about top 5 in the East either.

Only if Jermaine is healthy all year, Bosh improves his man D (he is already a good team defender) and Moon learns how to stay in front of his man will they be a top 5 defensive team in the east. Calderon is an awful defender and Parker is losing a step. And then their main players (Kapono, Bargnani) off the bench of terrible defenders. There are a LOT of ifs that will factor into their defensive standing.

There is no way they are top 5 defensively in the league, the perimeter D is just not enough even with an imposing interior D.

Only two out of five of those are complete sentences, and it makes it kind of hard to read ^_^

I have to say that it is very hard to run n' gun for 48 minutes and play defense on the other side of the ball for the same amount of time. The reason Nash can play 500 minutes a game is because Raja Bell takes the toughest defensive assignment so Nash can rest. Most running teams follow a similar pattern, having specialist players who either play offense or defense, not both. When David Robinson and Tim Duncan played at the same time, David almost exclusively played defense, and Timmy played offense. Hopefully they'll work it out.

The Raptors are a 100% half court team, they are just very efficient in their offensive sets and that's why their stats may indicate that they are a fast break team. However, even being a half court team, they will not be a top 5 defensive team. Maybe top 10 if everything goes right.

Hell yea they will be, they could struggle against teams with big physical centers but there arent many of those left but against the leage average I see them being in the top 5. I hope AP still has some legs left, hes their best on ball defender.

nah.

Bosh is a good defender, getting better after the Olympics, and O'Neal has always been a good defender, but Moon isn't anything special, I guess he's a decent-good defender, but Calderone, Parker, Bargnani, Kapono, and the likes are pretty bad, right?

Parker is an above average defender, much better than Moon IMO. Moon is a very good weakside help defender and gets steals, deflections, etc but he isn't the best at staying in front of his man. Parker has good laterals even though he's getting a bit older, he can still stay in front of his man.

Calderon, Bargnani and Kapono are brutal though, you are correct there.

But O'Neal has always been a great defender, not just good. He consistantly leads the league in blocked shots AND charges taken so if he is healthy he could boost their D. However, Calderon and the Euros are so bad defensively they will keep the Raps from being a top 5 defensive team, top 10 sounds good if everything goes right.
