Its has to be Phelps or Hussein Bolt from Jamaica....Nobody has done what they have accomplished.

Kobe scored 81 points...yeah Wilt Scored a 100

Kobe has 3 rings...Yeah Jordan has 6

I don't need to further elaborate..Those 2 above are the greatest athletes right now because no one ever since we have known about the human experience has accomplished what they have on a world competeitve stage!!!

In case you may be lost...Bolt has 3 world records....100m...200m..and the men's 4 X 100 relay. Fastest man ever on the planet!!

We are talking about the most popular, not the greatest. For an American athlete like Kobe to go to another country and get the reception he did is unheard of. No one, including Kobe himself, expected that kind of praise.

Actually the biggest and most popular sport in the world is soccer. Soccer in the Olympics is not as popular as not all the players are allowed to play. Every player has to be maximun 23 (three exceptions per team).

Most of the countries around the world love soccer, one of the bigger exceptions is america (prefers; baseball, basketball, hockey, football).

Phelps, right now is the most popular athlete.

And then everyone will forget about him in a few months. I love Michael Phelps BTW, but nobody cares about professional swimming. The sport is not popular at all and that hurts Phelps. Basketball is second in the world in popularity and it is gaining popularity (although it won't be as popular as soccer).

Who got the biggest reception in the Olympics out of every athlete? Kobe Bryant. End of discussion.

Its not Kobe Bryant or any basketball player.. football (soccer) is by far the most popular sport in the world. Players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are household names in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia.

Then you have Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and the other dominant athletes from individual sports...

MrBloop

All the Asians know who tiger is, b/c of his part Asian decent, thats a fact.

All the Black people in the world know worldwho tiger is b/c he's black

All the White people in the world Know who Tiger is b/c he took the Whitest sport in the world (and yes golf is a sport) and dominated it from the moment he went ametuer.

combine all of these factors and you have the most popular, and the most recodnized athlete in the world.

But Renaldo isn't remotely popular in America...while Tiger still holds considerable popularity in most other countries, especially in Europe and Asia.

Thats my point.

Also American product, tv shows, movies, athletes, etc as a whole are very popular outside of our country.

Almost every american has television and or the internet, our population may not be that of china...we have more people than any other country in Europe, I'm pretty sure...We have the most media athletes in the world, thats a fact.

The only reason you think golf isn't a sport, is b/c you can't play it well.

Its the ultimate slight of hand sport that, tests you resistance of force, hand eye coordination, focus, and nerves.

Its the thinking mans sport, thats been played the most by rich white america, but dominated by a brotha.

I'm no fan of soccer but what you just posted is complete BS. America isnt the centre of the universe.. I bet you havent even watched top level football (ahem.. soccer) game.

I never said it was the "Center of the World" you Wanker...

I said that its the largest media outlet in the world...thats a fact.

Tell me a bigger one???

I'll wait.

If Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade, Ladanian Tomlinson, Randy Moss, Alex Rodriguez etc all took up Soccer from an early age, they would dominate any Euro/South American athlete anyday of the week, especially the british ones.

you´re right, USA is one of the most important countries, if not number one. But saying that jordan or kobe or any other american athlete could play soccer well is wrong. Every sport needs certain qualities: most soccer players are 1.75 meters tall or even smaller, (if you are smaller is easier to do some moves) (1.75=5.9 feet). In other words some people could not do well in some sports, another example is a latinoamerican athlete that tries to play in the NFL, normally they have tiny bodies.

Also, around the world, more and more people are having negative thoughts against USA, because of a egocentric mentality. Dont get me wrong, I love eating fries, and a have good idea of america. But you have to understand that there are more countries, and cultural differences between people, and that wont make anyone better

New York is the biggest city in the world

Our military is the most powerful

Our products are the most popular

The United Nations is here

Our Movies are seen worldwide

We developed the vaccine for Polio

Invented the lightbulb

Put a man on the Moon first

We won WWII

Our Presidency is considered the most powerful position in the world.

We feed the most people in around the world

And And...Created the thing we're using right now, THE INTERNET.

And many many more.

I'm not gonna come out and arrogantly say what YOU think I feel, but...

If there was a "CENTER OF THE WORLD" as you eloquently put it, It would probrobly be the United States Of America.

America is the most powerful country no doubt, but I believe the thread topic was who is the most famous athlete, and it sure as hell isn't Tiger Woods. I'm not attacking you, just giving my two cents. But I don't see how listing all of America's accomplishments proves how Tiger Woods is the most popular when he clearly isn't.

While we're at it : the Chinese invented paper.

Canadians made the telephone and found insulin.

The Greeks invented democracy, and of course, the English invented the spork. What a delightful, but useless invention.

Oh and New York isn't the biggest city population nor size wise. If you're talking about economics, then yeah. Btw, who's in your sig? I know him but just can't put my finger on it.

Maybe Tennis Sharapova, Federer, Nadal

New York is the biggest city in the world:

IT ACTUALLY IS EITHER RIO DE JANEIRO or MEXICO DF

Our military is the most powerful

LOST IN KOREA; LOST IN VIETNAM, YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETELY ENDED THE WORK IN A TINY COUNTRY LIKE IRAK

Our products are the most popular:Agreed.

The United Nations is here:Agreed,

Our Movies are seen worldwide: Basically because of the big Bucks that companys invest, but agreed

We developed the vaccine for Polio:I dont know but may be.

Invented the lightbulb : edison ok

Put a man on the Moon first: THAT IS STILL OUTY IN THE JURY; THERE ARE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN NASA THAT POINT OUT IT WAS ALL MADE IN HOLYWOOD,MAY ALOS REMIND THAT THE PROJECT FROM NASA WAS STARTED ON NAZIS INVESTIGETAION OVER ROCKETS?, ernst von braun anybody?

We won WWII; ACTUALLY YOU ENTERED IT IN A VERY LATE STAGE, WHEN HITLER HAD ALREADY LOST IN THE RUSSIAN FRONT; JSUT MADE IT SHORTER TO HAPPEN

Our Presidency is considered the most powerful position in the world.
HE, WAIT AND SEE CHINA.

eventho hes hurt its gotta be tiger woods

Tiger Woods is not an athlete and golf is not a sport, its a hobby. The most athletic thing that Tiger does is pump his fists, gimme a break...hes no athlete.

So what if its the biggest media outlet in the world..? It does not make their athletes the most famous (what this thread is about) or better.

If Michael Jordan, Kobe or Lebron took up soccer from an early age they would very likely be defenders or goalkeepers because of their height and leaping ability.. they wouldnt be of much use anywhere else and they would not dominate.

Maybe if the entire world outside of North America threw all their weight at Basketball instead of soccer the US wouldnt dominate.. There are many exceptional athletes in sports other than Basketball, Baseball and American football.

All of you who are saying Kobe Bryant have homo love for him.....

or maybe they're just fans.

Its has to be Phelps or Hussein Bolt from Jamaica....

if he was so popular, you would know how to spell his name. Hussein? insulting.

Nobody has done what they have accomplished.

unfortunatey that doesn't proportionally translate into popularity/fame.

Kobe scored 81 points...yeah Wilt Scored a 100

Kobe has 3 rings...Yeah Jordan has 6

too bad they're not here to contest his fame anymore huh? :(

I don't need to further elaborate..

please do.

Those 2 above are the greatest athletes right now because no one ever since we have known about the human experience has accomplished what they have on a world competeitve stage!!!

yes they are, no other human being in the world can match up to their abilities.

In case you may be lost...Bolt has 3 world records....100m...200m..and the men's 4 X 100 relay. Fastest man ever on the planet!!

yep. he's even making news headlines for the first time in his life!

I dont' understand why so many of you guys think that Tiger is one of the most popular athlete in the world... Maybe in The US but not worldwide. I'm from Europe and Golf isn't that popular here, so most of the people don't even know Tiger Woods. As soccer is the most popular sports in the world it has to be Ronaldinho or Beckham.
From watching China you could see that Kobe is also very popular there, but that doesn't make him the most popular athlete. Bball is one of the biggest sports in China but Not all over the world. People in Europe might have heard of Kobe Bryant, but they don't really know him, because soccer is the #1 sports by far.

Usain Bolt was more popular in Beijing. He was the star of the Games. Phelps won more but wasn't as exciting. Kobe played it low key.

Tiger Woods has my vote. He turned on a whole generation of people to a sport that a mjority of young and older people would have began to watch without him.

Totally agree. Hands down Tiger Woods. Easily dominates his sport, head and shoulders above anyone else in the world in terms of marketing and popularity.
