Golden State Warriors team officials are questioning exactly how Monta Ellis injured his ankle. According to the Contra Costa Times, the team sent a trainer to Jackson, Miss., to investigate the injury further.

Ellis had surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn deltoid ligament. He is expected to be out three months. Ellis told the team he hurt the ankle while working out, but the newspaper report indicates the team doubts that because of the severity of the injury.

Ellis recently signed a six-year, $66 million contract in July, making him the team's highest-paid player. If his contract excluded him from certain activities--and Ellis was participating in such an activity (such as riding a motorcycle) while he was injured--the team could fine him, suspend him or void his contract.

After Baron Davis left the Warriors for the Clippers, Ellis was expected to step into the starting point guard position and run Don Nelson's uptempo attack. Ellis averaged 20.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists last season.

Stephen Jackson, Andris Biedrins and Corey Maggette all could play increased roles in the offense until Ellis is fully healthy.

"Void his contract" :speechless:....I don't think the Warriors would go that far but you never know.

Edit: He seems like a good guy. Shouldn't be something illegal.

If the health trainers say that he didn't get injured while working out then they might be right. They know what there doing.

i don't think he would be so dumb where he would get this great contract..and then go ride a motorcycle or something 2 mess it all up..especially if he knows the terms of his contract and what not..

Ellis is gonna b a GREAT player...he already is damn good

Looks like someone realized the injury was REAL bad, as in Career Injury and are trying to save them butts by voiding the contract .

Its always possible that he really did mess his ankle up playing a pickup game. I can understand why the team would investigate though

Why is it that guy could be durable his whole career, not even break a nail, but the minute he signs a big contract, he gets injured? Can anyone explain why this seems to happen.

How could he be faking it. They probably took x rays. They already know what kind of sprain he has on his ankle.

Hmmm, this could get interesting, but Ellis doesn't look like that type of guy but you never know. If I was the Warriors I would be doing the same thing.

Pickup game. NBA players just can't help themselves. They gotta show the boys from the streets that they are where they are cause they're the best in the gym and in the streets. He probably was trying to cross someone up or dunk on someone and popped that ankle.

Props goes to the front office for publicly accusing your franchise player of lying.
