DETROIT -- Might Dontrelle Willis and or Freddy Garcia pitch for the Detroit Tigers in September?

Willis has returned to the Tigers, and is working out with pitching coach Chuck Hernandez. He will be promoted Sept. 1, after spending three months with the Lakeland Tigers and Toledo Mud Hens, but manager Jim Leyland said it has yet to be determined if Willis will pitch in a game for the Tigers.

Willis, sent to the minors to work on his mechanics and rediscover the strike zone, will be activated Sept. 1, when major league rosters are allowed to expand from 25 to 40 players.

Leyland said Willis will pitch in a simulated game Tuesday with others called up from the minors.

Leyland watched former Seattle Mariners All-Star starter Freddy Garcia throw three innings of two-hit, shutout ball for the Mud Hens Thursday in Toledo. Garcia struck out four and had no walks.

"I liked some things I saw," Leyland said. "His arm's free and he threw with no restriction."

Garcia is recovering from shoulder surgery, and Leyland said he threw fastballs in the 86 to 89 mph range while showing a good curve and split-finger fastball. Garcia threw about 5 mph above that in his prime, but Leyland said he had not thrown that hard in recent years and was still effective.

Will Garcia pitch for Detroit in September?

"We're discussing some options," Leyland said, "but nothing's been cemented."

I feel for Willis. I honestly hope he can return and be a solid pitcher next year. It's such a shame to see how much of a dive he's taken.
