Game 1

Friday, August 29 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_493137.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_134320.jpg

BOS: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (15-2, 2.98) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/matsuda01.shtml) vs CWS: RHP Javier Vazques (10-11, 4.37) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/v/vazquja01.shtml)

Red Sox: After reeling off victories in four straight starts, Matsuzaka took a no-decision in his last outing, giving up eight hits and five runs over six innings against the Blue Jays. In five August starts, Matsuzaka is 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA. In 12 Fenway starts, Dice-K is 8-2 with a 3.28 ERA. Matsuzaka turned in one of his best starts of the season against the White Sox on Aug. 9, giving up four hits and a run over eight innings.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_493137.jpg

White Sox: Vazquez pitched far better Saturday than his numbers indicate. The right-hander retired the first 17 Tampa Bay hitters he faced before giving up a double to Jason Bartlett to end the perfect game. He gave up a run in that inning, but still held the lead. He loaded the bases in the eighth without recording an out, and the bullpen couldn't stop the bleeding. All three of the stranded runners scored, making Vazquez the losing pitcher. All told, he gave up four runs on five hits in seven-plus innings. Vazquez has not faced Boston this year but he is 2-5 with a 4.61 ERA lifetime against them.

Game 2

Saturday, August 30 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_456102.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_279824.jpg

BOS: RHP David Pauley (0-0, 10.38) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/pauleda01.shtml) vs CWS: LHP Mark Buehrle (11-10, 3.86) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/buehrma01.shtml)

Red Sox: Unless he is needed in an emergency relief situation on Friday, Pauley will make Saturday's start in place of the injured Josh Beckett. This will be Pauley's second start of the season. The last time Pauley pitched was April 22 against the Angels, when he had to fill in because Beckett was ill the day of his start. In that one, Pauley gave up seven hits and five runs over 4 1/3 innings. Pauley has made four Major League starts for the Red Sox, going 0-2 with an 8.41 ERA. His first three starts were in 2006. Pauley had a strong year at Triple-A Pawtucket, going 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 25 starts.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_456102.jpg

White Sox: Buehrle didn't get much help from his defense on Sunday against the Rays. Three unearned runs scored in the first two innings to put him in an early hole. He held his own, though, and allowed just two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. The White Sox rallied with runs in the ninth and 10th innings to bail out the left-hander, who has a three-game winning streak. Buehrle faced Boston once this season and pitched brilliantly. He gave up one run over seven innings and struck out a season-high eight batters.

Game 3

Sunday, August 31 - 1:35 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_123801.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_425856.jpg

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (8-8, 3.73) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wakefti01.shtml) vs CWS: RHP Gavin Floyd (14-6, 3.70) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/floydga01.shtml)

Red Sox: Wakefield picked up the win against the Yankees on Tuesday in his first start since returning from the disabled list. The knuckleballer held the New York offense to three runs on eight hits in five innings. It wasn't his best stuff, but he put Boston in a position to win in his first outing since Aug. 6. He recorded one walk and one strikeout and left after throwing 80 pitches, 55 for strikes. Wakefield has not faced the White Sox this season.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_123801.jpg

White Sox: Floyd not only added to his career high in victories, but he saved the White Sox bullpen by working eight innings in a win over the Orioles on Tuesday before countless friends and family members. Floyd struck out four, walked one and yielded just four hits. With Thursday's off-day, Floyd will pitch in the series finale against the Red Sox, as the White Sox use a four-man setup one time through the rotation. Floyd has a 1-0 record with an 8.44 ERA against Boston this year, having allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings in the home victory. His career mark also stands at 1-0 against Boston, and he has never pitched at Fenway Park.

I'll assume the Saturday loss. The other two are possibly winnable. We need Matsuzaka to step up.

Come on. 80% of the fans outside of Chicago hate Ozzie. I understand why you'd like him if he managed your club, but it's virtually impossible for the rest of the country to enjoy that guy.

Sorry, there is a difference between 'old school' and Ozzie. He's an arrogant bastard and a biggot. He throws players under the bus. That's not being 'the Man', it's just being an opinionated jerk.

I liked the trade when it first went down. I figured Bay could atleast be servicable in a replacement role for Manny. Hes been MUCH more than that. Hes been a straight BEAST. 3-3 with the bases loaded. He has more rbis than Manny has as a dodger. Got 2 be impressed with and love JBAY

Because Dice-K is critical to our stretch run. No need to put an unnecessary work load on him, in a blowout.

Ozzie Guillen said that the Sox would have a letdown after playing in Yankee Stadium, and that his team was going to come in and win the series. He just doesn't know when to shut up.
We haven't won the series yet....at all. The White Sox could take the next two.

True as it may be, it still shows that Ozzie is a freaking moron. He needs to learn to shut his mouth. We immediately went back home and put a beatdown on the White Sox. There is still two games for them to take the series, but taking game 1 puts us in a good position to take the series and win at least 2. He should keep his mouth shut.

Yes. I agree 100%. Made that comment during the game.

I said "Some people wanna make the case that he's quirky, or just blunt...but really, he's just a ****ing *** hole."

And I never saw his comments about a "let down" by the Red Sox.

But it's not exactly a good thing to talk smack, and then get beat down.

Tragedy

I remember he did that earlier this year as well. So heads up.

This game is going exactly how we needed it to go. To take two games in this series is huge, especially with a chance of sweeping.

well bowden's performance proved to me that rob neyer is a complete fraud

His scouting rport of him in a chat was that his fastball stayed around 88-90 mph and that his secondary stuff was almost non existent

uet i saw bowden consistently at 92 and 93 and got 94 a couple of times, and his secondary stuff was effective especially the changeup

and he has great control

Did he say anything about throwing pure fastballs for two innings before he starts using breaking stuff? Seriously though, good win. We need to obviously keep rolling if the Rays are never going to lose.

Anyone think the White Sox just seemed out of it? They really didn't look like the team we played a few weeks ago.

As long as we make the Playoffs, my friend.

1) Bowden looks like he'll be a solid pitcher in the future. He's still just 21, so please, people, don't put the pressure on him yet. If he's not in the rotation in 2009 (I'm willing to bet he's not), don't be upset. They'll likely transition one (Or both) of Clay and Masterson to the rotation next year. Turning the staff over to the youngsters is a slow process.

However, Bowden needs to learn to throw more stuff other than the Fastball. I understand it's his first start in the majors, but if he continues doing what he did tonight, he'll never last. I assume it was a combo of jitters and Varitek wanting him to overpower a freeswinging team with Fastballs.

2) Dustin Pedroia is simply amazing. 4-4 last night, 4-4 tonight. Web gem last night, beautiful slide tonight. Is there anything he can not do? I love Youkilis and all, but Pedroia, in my opinion, as Reggie would say, is the straw that stirs the drink.

3) Ozzie Guillen. The guy made the comments he made, and now he looks like a complete fool as we've simply man handled his 2006 World Series team in two straight games. Lets take a sweep and show the idiot.

As much as I love Pedroia and what he's doing for us right now, the best point of your Woodrow Wilsonesque point would definitely have to be the third. I'm in such a good mood right now just thinking back to those quotes... it's only 2 of 3 I know, but still. We haven't just won 2 of 3 and already taken the series, but we have beat them in rather convincing fashion. Ozzie is just a moron... go make out with your son again.

On a side note, Dice-k must really enjoy pitching against the White Sox. Eight innings in both his starts... only two hits allowed in each if I remember right?

You know, the more I think about it, is there anybody that likes Ozzie outside of White Sox fans? It reminds me of the Manny situation... everybody I knew would feel compelled to tell me how much of a moron Manny is. Me, being the Red Sox fan, defended him and always had to try to make points to how I can cheer for him... now that he's gone I could care less what he does. But I loved him as long as he was in a Red Sox uniform (well, and actually tried), much like I'm sure White Sox fan's will love Ozzie and say how his antics are great for the White Sox and somehow great for baseball as long as he's the manager and they are somewhat successful.

I couldn't care less, to be honest. I think we're showing how easily we could man handle the White Sox. I don't care what the numbers say about the Angels this year, we've always owned them in the past. The Twins would be very, very fun.

I certainly have doubt. Wakefield is pitching...he's prone to give up the home run. The White Sox are a home run hitting team.

And they got Gavin Floyd going, and he's been good.

But you also forgot: Wakefield is having a good year this year. He's been so much more consistently this year than in years past.

I think he does a solid job starting tonight. Not calling a win, because our BP is so good at blowing up.

Needed some clutch hitting today that we didn't get. But overall, the Red Sox seem to be in a pretty good groove.

Tragedy
08-31-2008, 08:58 PM
Yeah, 2/3 is sold. We just need to keep taking 2/3 for the rest of the year (Obviously we'll lose a series at least once more the rest of the season), and we're all set. To go into NY and beat them 2/3, and then immediately come home and beat down the Chi Sox 2/3 means we're getting ready to hit a hot spot. Very, very good.

Especially when we were without Youkilis for the last part of that mini-stretch.

And if we keep taking 2/3. We'll only lose 1 game on Tampa every 3 games, so that'll be good.

And I believe we were 19-8. Sucks that we haven't been able to catch them, but whatever. It's not like we're limping our way to the Playoffs (Well, injury wise, we are). We're playing our butts off and winning important games that teams like the White Sox, Twins, and Yankees are failing to do.

Yeah. The Red Sox organization should be proud of the way this season has gone, imo.

Lots of injuries, you had the Manny fiasco.....and all the while the Red Sox keep chugging along, and winning ball games. And the front office seems to be adding "professional" baseball players. Guys like Jason Bay, Mark Kotsay, Paul Byrd. Even Sean Casey in the offseason. And almost had Giles.
