Phil Jackson: Rodman is the greatest athlete I've ever coached

By J.E. Skeets

Phil Jackson sure had plenty to say during a speech to the University of North Dakota as part of the convocation in which he received an honorary degree. Of the course of an hour, P-Jax criticized his school's nickname, told funny stories about Shaq swimming, and picked Dennis Rodman as the greatest athlete he ever coached. From the OC Register: "[Rodman] could probably play a 48-minute game and play the 48th minute stronger than the first minute of the game," Jackson told the crowd at UND. "He was that terrific an athlete." Video "proof," after the jump

He had a sense for the ball that few players ever really had. He was always around the ball. If he had played on teams that required him to score then he probably would have been a better scorer. He was always required to defend, rebound, and pass and he did all three superbly. He was as good a defender as I've ever seen and, next to Barkley, the best rebounder I've ever seen.

I remember Shaq, still on Orlando, trying to post up Rodman and not being able to and getting frustrated, ultimately getting a technical for lashing out at him. In addition to all of his great attributes he was excellent at getting under your skin.

Toni Kukoc was better athlete than rodman imo. so was vinny del negro and BJ armstrong.

is that's how he got his nickname the worm? Its cause he could always worm his way through a pack of guys to grab the rebound. Led the league in rebounding for 7 straight seasons (his average for that 7 season period was 16.75rpg). He was one of the greats of the modern game when it came to rebounding.

Well there is a reason why no one ever can get again to average 18 rebounds.

The same reason that you cant hardly find teams with two players averaging more than 20 points.

Or the reason where you CANT find a roster with 5 players averaging over 15 points a game.

Back then 130-125 was a Usual Score.

Teams ran and ran and ran and took a lot of shooting.

So if you take a lot of shooting there are going to be tons of rebounds for Grabs.

His Owns fist team success in 89 and 90 killed that kind of game.

And Detroits 04 and Celtics current ring have just put the Nails on the Coffin for the " beautifull Game"

Prepare to see 60-50 scores in the finals soon.

The 88-89 Pistons only took 7.23 shots per game more than the 07-08 Celtics. They also shot at a better FG%, .494 to .475, and averaged 6.1ppg more.

But is fas a more fluid game where players ran and ran and ran.

Of course they did, and they were the first team to focus on defense.

But the shots made that count for his rebounding are the ones the other team made.
