From ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3556108)

The Golden State Warriors won't have Baron Davis or Monta Ellis in their starting lineup on opening night.

In the latest blow during a difficult summer for Golden State, ESPN.com has learned that Ellis -- just awarded one of the biggest pay raises in league history -- will be sidelined at least three months, possibly four, after suffering a severe high ankle sprain in his hometown of Jackson, Miss.

Ellis was scheduled to undergo surgery on his left ankle in Alabama on Wednesday, according to team sources, after he informed the club late last week that he had injured himself working out. More specifics about how Ellis sustained the injury were not immediately available.

Surgery is needed to repair a torn deltoid ligament, sources said, and the foot will need to be immobilized for the first six weeks.

It was less than a month ago that Ellis received a six-year, $66 million contract extension from the Warriors, whose tumultuous offseason began with Davis making a verbal commitment to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers on the very first day of free agency.

Ouch. that blows. that sucks, I really wanted to see how he was going to fare running the point. I guess Marcus Williams is going to get his chance to show what he's worth?

They should trade for Ben Gordon...

couldn't they just sign him?
or is he restricted ?

He's restricted but maybe a sign and trade can be worked out. He could easily replace the offense of Ellis until he gets healthy.

If all goes well he could be back in December. Get well Ellis. Was looking forward to see how he played with his new contract and running the point as well

Just hope this injury doesn't affect his quickness, explosiveness and leaping ability.

Pfff...Had to happen in a high-expectation season for him...

WOW This is terrible for the Warriors and Monta. I hope this injury doesn't slow him down or change his game.

They will be lucky to get 8 wins without him.

Tough break for the Warriors. Ellis really needs to get all the rest he can for it and not try and rush back, otherwise if he gets it injured again, it could be one of those nagging injuries that will bother him for a really long time.

Yes this does suck.... I am hoping in his absence Marcus Williams can step up and show some of his skills. Its going to be a tough first couple months without Monta but if we can stay somewhere right below .500 I think we will be ok. Its going to be hard though....

I was thinking that GS had a chance, but not after this blow! This will kill them bad! I doubt they make the playoffs now. Now it will be either Den or Por fighting for the 8th spot!

What a HUGE blow for Warriors fans. With Ellis taking over the full time 1 spot, and Magette coming in in an attempt to make up for the scoring loss from Baron Davis' departure, the Warriors were looking like a team that would be in the mix with Denver, Portland, and the Clippers for that final spot. Losing Ellis for the beginning of the season may prove to be detrimental to Golden State's playoff chances. Seeing as last season in the west, first place was 2 games ahead of 6th, I think its safe to assume that 8th seed will be decided by a game or 2 at most. That being said, this injury could really hold the Warriors back from playing as well as they can to make the playoffs.

They'll still do alright with Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Andris Biedrins, and their acquisitions of Corey Magette and Marcus Williams. I put them just out of playoff reach, though.
