Lebron, and its not even close.

If we are talking basketball-wise and completely ignoring endorsements, advertisements, sponserships, and all revenue that Lebron will bring, not to mention rise in home and road attendance, I still think he is the best player for any team.

If we are taking all aspects like I listed above, it's a complete no-brainer. Lebron is already a global phenomenon, and he's not even 24 years old yet...

Seriously?

I can see Wade being close to Lebron in terms of being a better player and making your team better, but if you're a GM, you have to take into account the revenue that each player brings... and Lebron is pure gold in that department...

Not true that alot of Prep-To-Pros players failed in the NBA, I would say 80% of them who came out of high school to the pros made it just fine.

These players speak for themselves:
Moses Malone, Darryl Dawkins, Shawn Kemp, Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O'Neal, Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, LeBron James, Dwight Howard

These players are making or breaking:
Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, J.R Smith, Andrew Bynum, Gerald Green, Monta Ellis, Rashard Lewis, Tyson Chandler, Stephen Jackson

These players are good enough role players:
Al Harrington, Darius Miles, Kwame 'the butterfinger' Brown, Eddy Curry, DeSagana Diop, Travis Outlaw, Kendrick Perkins, Shaun Livingston, Sebastian Telfair, Dorrel Wright, Martell Webster, C.J Miles, Louis Williams

Looks to me like alot of players who came from high school to NBA are indeed not failures. There were probably 10-15 more high school draftees from what I listed.

Anyways, back to the topic. I do, however, agree with what you say about college ball and whatnot. It's true, it's not fair knowing about these players prior to picking them now. Why? Because we know what each and every one of those players are capable of doing on the court today. This topic should be renamed to something else; 'If you were to build a FRANCHISE today, who would you pick?', would make more sense.

I'll just play along with the topic and pretend this was draft day and we never saw any of these players play in the NBA. My pick would of been Wade, because he was a stud in college ball. Although Melo won the NCAA Championship...

But if you were to ask me which of these players I would take today, now that I know about their play style in the NBA, then it would be LeBron James.

That's all, sorry for the long post.

Oscar Robertson was just interviewed on the John Thompson show today...
http://nick8.surfernetwork.com/Media/Pod/wwxx/podcasting/08-26-08-Oscar-Robertson-on-JT-Show.mp3

Here's the Kobe-related part of the interview. Questions in italics, answers in quotes.

JT: Team USA got along like a team, how it's supposed to be.

Oscar: "I've been on some great basketball teams in HS, college, and the pros, there's a lot of arguing, but when you win, you don't worry about the arguing. I think, when you have certain ball players, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Wade, you're not going to have any selfness out there, those guys came to play, they came to win."

JT: If you had to start a team, you're the GM, had to pick one player from that team, who would you pick first?

O.R.: "Kobe Bryant." (Thompson agrees)

Why was Kobe the guy for you?

O.R.: "If you look at Kobe in the past, when they were winning championships with the Lakers, they gave Shaq a lot of the credit for doing everything, look at the great plays Kobe made to get the ball to Shaq, going through making great passes, stealing the ball, etc. Same thing he did the other night, when they needed a basket, drove in and makes one from 12 feet out, then hits the long jump shot. He was probably involved in the last 15 points, directly involved in it. I know he does a lot of things people don't like, probably shoots a lot of time, but still, guy's a gamer."

J.T.: Michael Jordan, live from Mirage Hotel and casino in Vegas, never will forget, just as camp ending last year, talking to Michael, I said, 'who do you think is best player in the NBA?", Jordan said, 'Kobe'. I said why? I thought he was going to talk about his offensive ability, he said, "because none of those other superstars want to guard the other superstar on the other team, and Kobe wants to guard them".

Lebron shoots 35% from midrange and 31% from three.

In comparison Luke Walton is ridiculed by Laker fans and NBA analysts for being a terrible shooter, BUT he shoots a better percentage in both those areas of shooting than Lebron.

Seriously?

I can see Wade being close to Lebron in terms of being a better player and making your team better, but if you're a GM, you have to take into account the revenue that each player brings... and Lebron is pure gold in that department...

I would take LeBron as well, but last time I checked Dwyane was a marketing staple in the NBA. When do you NOT see his face on a tv screen? Gatorade, Converse, T Mobile...the man is also a global icon in terms of marketing. Like I said, i'd definitely take LeBron as a franchise cornerstone, but not because of his marketability advantage.
