Game 1

Tuesday, August 26 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_123801.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_120485.jpg

BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield (7-8, 3.67) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wakefti01.shtml) vs NYY: LHP Andy Pettitte (13-9, 4.17) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/pettian01.shtml)

Red Sox: With the tingling and numbness in his right arm still an issue, Josh Beckett will be skipped against the Yankees, leaving a vacancy that will likely be filled by Wakefield, who pitched a side session on Saturday and was pronounced ready to start on Tuesday. The knuckleballer has been on the disabled list since Aug. 7 with tightness in his right shoulder and is expected to be activated in time to face the Yankees on Tuesday. In his two starts before going on the disabled list, Wakefield had gone 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA over 12 1/3 innings. In his career against the Yankees, the 16-year veteran is 9-17 with a 5.14 ERA.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_123801.jpg

Yankees: Pettitte picked up his 13th win of the season and his first since July 26 with seven innings of one-run ball on Wednesday at the Rogers Centre, holding the Blue Jays to just Alex Rios' run-scoring single in the sixth inning. Pettitte has given up five hits or fewer in 11 of his 27 appearances this season. He is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox this season, having beaten them on July 26 at Fenway Park with six innings of three-run ball, though only one was earned.

Game 2

Wednesday, August 27 - 7:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_111838.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_132260.jpg

BOS: RHP Paul Byrd (8-11, 4.61) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/byrdpa01.shtml) vs NYY: RHP Sidney Ponson (7-4, 4.67) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/ponsosi01.shtml)

Red Sox: Byrd did not have his best stuff against the Blue Jays in his last start but was still able to collect the win; he allowed four runs on six hits over six innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out four to collect his first win as a member of the Red Sox. The right-hander was acquired from Cleveland in a trade on Aug. 12. Against the Yankees in his career, Byrd is 2-5 with a 4.90 ERA.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_111838.jpg

Yankees: Ponson had his worst outing of the season on Thursday at Toronto, lasting just two-plus innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. Ponson had little command, uncharacteristic of his '08 Yankees tenure so far, and threw pitches over the heart of the plate. The seven runs allowed were his most since he did so on July 27 at Boston, a game he was similarly despondent after.

Game 3

Thursday, August 28 - 1:05 ET

http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_452657.jpg-------http://mlb.mlb.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_119608.jpg

BOS: LHP Jon Lester (12-5, 3.49) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lestejo01.shtml) vs NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.45) (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mussimi01.shtml)

Red Sox: Lester was hammered by the Blue Jays in his last start. The left-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits in just 2 1/3 innings, the shortest outing of his career as a starter. In addition, the seven runs he gave up tied a career high, which he set on Aug. 18, 2006, against the Yankees. Lester will look to rebound from the tough outing when he takes the mound at Yankee Stadium, in what could be Boston's final game at the historic venue. In three career starts against New York, Lester is 2-0 with a 4.12 ERA.

http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/images/players/action/ph_452657.jpg

Yankees: Mussina had his best outing of the season against Baltimore in his last start. After going just two-thirds of an inning and then five innings in his two previous starts, Mussina was able to toss six innings allowing just four runs. He finished with a no-decision but was happy with his performance. In a pivotal series with the Red Sox, the Yankees will be hoping that Mussina can display the same dominance he showed in his last start against Boston, when he threw six innings and allowed four hits and no earned runs in a 2-1 victory.

Should be a great series with a fantastic pitching matchup

RedSoxtober
08-26-2008, 02:46 PM
This just reminds me again what complete idiots the MLB schedulers were. The Sox were the Yankees first opponents when the Stadium opened. This year the Sox and Yankees have the last series of the season against one another with the Stadium closing.... but for some reason those clowns put it at Fenway instead of Yankee Stadium.

How much sense of history would it have taken to flip-flop that series with this one and close Yankee Stadium out the way it opened -- with perhaps the greatest rivalry in sports???

That woud be terrific, but I kind of agree with knittingmill in that this might be too soon and not be the best team for Wake to face right after injury.

I just seen on ESPN Bottom line that Mark Kotsay was scratched from his start tonight. I wonder if JD is heading to the DL and Kotsay is heading to Boston? He's going somewhere because why would ESPN make such a big deal about Mark Kotsay missing a start? Does anybody know what this guys stats are? I'm on the internet through my PS3 and I can't open 2 tabs at once.

Don't put any stock into ESPN announcing that he's out. Put stock into the announcement that he's out, not that ESPN is announcing it. If they knew anything at all they'd report it.

That said, this ump is BRUTAL.

Byrd has had trouble keeping the ball in the yard in his first two starts in a Sox uniform. If he can avoid the longball, he'll be just fine. We know that he doesn't walk anyone, so as long as he avoids elevating his pitches he won't be lit up tonight. If he does though, its not the end of the world, because of Ponson's 4.67 ERA, .310 BAA, and 1.59 WHIP. We will score plenty of runs off of him, like we did last time (4 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1K on July 27th).

Superiority
08-27-2008, 05:18 PM

Looks like Bay has picked up Manny's mantle as the "Yankee Killer".

BTW, we haven't heard all that much from the Manny suckups recently. I'd say that Bay's solid play has shown that he's the LF of the future (hopefully for the long term future with a contract extension)....
