Fiba = ********. We just ran through everyone and we're ranked #2?? Wow. How does that happen?

The rankings aren't based just on the 2008 Tournament

Argentina 2004 Gold + 2008 Bronze > USA 2008 Gold

So we determine rankings NOW on what happened 4 years ago? As i said earlier......

FIBA rankings are a continuous process, last update was after 2008 Olympic Tournament

That's just weird. When was the last time the USA team with Kobe, d-wade and company actually lost a game? Did they ever lose over the past few years?

Not sure I like the way Fiba's ranking system works.

Argentina 2004 Gold + 2008 Bronze > USA 2008 Gold

why is argentina 2004 gold + 2008 bronze better than USA 2008 gold + 2004 bronze?

Its not based on the 8 last years... Argentina might of have won more things than the US in the total. It's also not just on Olympics, there is the World Championship that is incorporated.

Argentina just happens to have more points, most of the times these rankings don't mean anything. Just checkout the FIFA one's for soccer. Team's like Croatia are ranked higher than Brazil... Romania is infront of France... All weird things like that.

Argentina:
2004 Olympic Gold
2008 Olympic Bronze

<

USA:
2004 Olympic Bronze
2007 FIBA Americas Championship
2008 Olympic Gold

I now stand corrected, so clearly I don't understand those FIBA rankings... I thought Argentina had the best record in international competition in recent years, but I was corrected by other poster (MetsAllTheWay)

I dont completely understand it, but the key words are "Promotional Purposes"

wait didn't the US win the 07 Fiba Americas?

LeBron James and the rest of the United States squad made sure that what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas with a 118-81 throttling of Argentina in the gold medal game of the FIBA Americas Championship at Thomas & Mack Center.

Yeah, you're right I stand corrected.

I was mistaken b/c Scola was the Finals' MVP, I always thought the MVP had to be from the winning team...

the rankings are dumb, to say the least.
we get no points for running through almost everyone, and winning gold.
while teams like germany get +45 for not making the medal round, and argentina gets +150 for bronze.

wow, i think i know what happened.
i think the 2008 results replaced the 2000 olympic results.
we won gold in 2000, so no improvement.
argentina went from no medal, to bronze.
wow...

and argentina had a silver in the 02 world championships, while USA's only medal in the past 2 championships was bronze in 06.

so the US probably has to wait till the 2010 to reclaim the #1 spot if they win the worlds in turkey.

it might be that teams make points based on how much they improve

for example:

Israel was expected to make it to the EuroBasket Quarterfinals, and they didnt... they finished 12th in the Tourney (out of 16 teams I think) and they lost 12 ranking pts

as i suspected, they take the last 2 of most events into account.
but also the last 5 eurobasket/and fiba "continent" championships.

which means israel lost a few points points b/c they finished 9th in that eurobasket thing in 97, and that gets replaced by the 07' 11th-12th place finish.

and like i said, the US didnt "improve" upon their 2000 gold, that gets replaced w/ a 2008 gold, so they dont get any more points.

oh i didnt see you already posted it.:o
kind of a strange way to rank things.
not rewarding them for winning gold, and actually losing the #1 spot b/c some team they just ran through won bronze.
