Assuming George Karl doesn't smarten up and start him, my pick is J.R. Smith.

Who's yours?

If anyone wants to post a comprehensive list of candidates, I'll use that list to put up a poll. Otherwise, we can just leave it open ended...

Ideally, Francisco Garcia.

But, it will be Ginobili if he continues to "come of the bench".

I don't see him - or anybody, for that matter - winning the award two seasons in a row anymore. I think the "spirit" of the award is that it's someone who has excelled as a role player but is now on the bubble of being true starting material (which is part of the reason I was against Manu's selection this year). From what I can tell, there have only been two players to win two consecutive 6th man awards. The last was Detlef Schrempf in 91 and 92, and before him Kevin McHale in 84 and 85.

That is the spirit of the award but the voting criteria is quite clear. Yote for "league's most valuable player for his team coming off the bench as a substitute" and that will be Manu again this year. But if that's what the Spurs have to do...

My top picks for contenders for it would be:
Ginobli
Barbosa
Korver
Gordon (I assume hes going to be coming off the bench anyway)
Stuckey
JR Smith
Posey
Battier
Haslem(I would assume he'll be coming off the bench with Beasly and Marion)
Terry
Vujacic

I think it will end up being stuckey though...

Didn't Rickey Pierce win it 2x as well.... (maybe not back to back though).

Here's the list (http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php/NBA_Sixth_Man_of_the_Year_Award_Winners), and it looks like you're exactly right... he won in 87 and 90, so twice but not consecutive.

Ben Gordon, back to scoring 20+ a game, and has the extra motivation when he hits unrestricted free agency next year.

Garcia will get much more playing time and prove to you all why he will be the 6th man of the year :D

Presumably the next poll will be who is the most improved SF in the 2020 season..

C'mon. We don't even know what the lineups are.. Even the preseason isn't here yet.

Too early to say anything about this.

I think the guy will be somebody not from that list.

Where's Nocioni? He'll likely be the 6th man if/when Gordon is traded.

Nah, he wont get enough minutes even if Gordon is traded which is unlikely, and when Deng is supposed to be our franchise guy, we have Tyrus and Gooden taking the minutes at the 4 spot. That Hughes and Gooden trade really did screw things up a bit.

Beno7500

With Artest gone, Garcia should get about 25 - 30 minutes.

Afridi786

^Well, seeing as Ginobli, Gordon, and Barbosa are the three best 6th men in the league, I'd put my money on one of them.

javis, if you have a more interesting thread to start in the NBA forum that will generate more discussion than this, then by all means, post it.

It will be your first NBA thread since May.

I understand what you're saying, but within reason we do have a pretty good idea of who many if not most of the legit contenders for this award will be. It's perfectly fair game for a conversation topic during a long, slow, boring offseason.

And it is a much better topic than some of the other, uh, interesting threads, that have been created.

But I really think Stuckey will win it. I don't know if the award historically goes to a player on a winning team, but that of course would make sense, and I think Stuckey will almost be like a 6th starter for the Pistons. They love him, and expect big things from him, and I think he'll deliver. If he doesn't get 6th man, I think hes got a real chance to take most improved, maybe both.

In my case, it's both. If you look at the late season surge in J.R. Smith's performance, and the fact that in the playoffs he was the best player on a Nuggets team that fell apart - the one who played with the most guts, and heart and intensity and results - I think it projects very, very well into next season for him.

Warkentien (one of Denver's 3 co-GMs) also mentioned when they announced his signing that he's been in the gym working harder this offseason than any other player on the team. He also went to Tim Grgurich's basketball camp and joined the U.S. select team. He genuinely seems to have gone through a major attitude adjustment, and appears to be working harder than ever. And if you combine those factors with the raw skill and talent he's got, then yeah, I think it bodes great for his success. And if he's coming off the bench (and I'm not happy about this, but I expect he will be), then I feel very confident in saying I believe he'll be in the top 3 (if not the front runner) contending for the 6th man prize.

Yeah, JR definetly has the ability. The dude can score in bunches, and man, last year, near the end of the seson, when his long range shot is on, whooh. Like in feb when he shot almost 46% on over 6 threes a game. and in march at almost 43% at more thatn 6 threes a game.

I went with Shane Battier. Not because i'm a homer or anything, just because I think he is a good starter and having him coming off the bench to sink 3's and play some good D is just perfect. VIP 6th Man.
