Perhaps clearing cap space to land a bigger name, the Devils New Jersey Devils have waived defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski Vitaly Vishnevski .

Vishnevski is believed to be planning to play in Russia this coming season, although a claim by another NHL team could alter that.

The Devils signed Vishnevski to a three-year contract last summer worth $5.4 million, with two $2 million seasons remaining. His salary cap liability is $1.8 million for each of the remaining two years, which would increase the Devils' cap space to about $3.5 million.

Besides oft-rumored Jay Bouwmeester in Florida, a major attraction at $4.9 million in his walk year, Ducks defenseman Mathieu Schneider with one year left at $5.7 million could be attractive to Lou Lamoriello.

Already this summer, Europeans Karel Rachunek Karel Rachunek and Sergei Brylin have departed the Devils, while Bobby Holik and Fedor Fedorov were signed.

Lou didn't let Niedermayer go, he actually offered him more money then the Ducks did, but he was just ready for a change of scenery.

As far as D-men go I would love to have Jay Bouwmeester, he is young and great on the point. He would easily be our top defensemen. I wonder if a guy like Eric Brewer could be snagged out of St.Louis?

^ i guess, but i still think the whole thing could have been prevented, either by earlier contract negotiation or by bringing rob over. doesn't matter now tho. i'd like to see brewer here.

I think that this point was key...I don't think that money played a part in it...he wanted to play with his brother...

On the original topic, vitaly started off kinda slow, went through a period where he was hitting like an animal, then went back into his shell...can't say we will hurt much letting him walk...
