Everyone putting Magic over Mikan is crazy... seriously, do your homework... :pity:

Come on. Mikan was playing 60 years ago. He was a dorky looking white guy playing against an average of 8 teams a season. One of his finals against the Knicks was not even allowed to be played in his own stadium due to a Circus in town. They had to play in ST. Paul. THe Knicks could not play at the Garden cause it was booked also. Basketball was a joke back then. Magic Johnson was one of the main reasons that basketball has grown into what it is today. When people think Lakers, Mikan comes after Magic, Kobe, Kareem, Shaq, West, Wilt, Baylor, Worthy, Chick Hearn before they think of Mikan.

I dont know if I even want to argue with you, but Mikan was a trailblazer for basketball, and transformed the game like only a few others have. They changed rules specifically because of his dominance. Only 2 other players have been that dominant, and that's Wilt and Shaq.

I'm not arguing that Mikan was a better player than Magic, cuz that would be ridiculous, but I'm saying that Mikan helped make the NBA what it is today, and IMO is a bigger influence in the history of the NBA than Magic has, although its very close, cuz Magic has influenced most of the current NBA players...

The reality is he played 60 years ago, and he played on a small market team. His impact on the game was far greater than Magic's was, but this is a popularity contest, and Magic being the more recent figure and having played when basketball was reaching its peak in popularity will no doubt be the majority vote.

Him being in the NBA its inagural season has something to do with him being a trend setter. Of course they are going to tweak things when you start something new. They were looking for ways to improve the game. If Mikan was in the league even 10 years later, he would not have the distiction of being a trend setter. They widened the lane from 6 to 12 feet cause it was too easy to post up close to the rim, I think they would have done that for anyone who had success. You act like he helped change something that had been going on for 50 years like Shaq. Shaq truely changed the game, Mikan was just a part of an evolution

It had been going on but not in the NBA. When something is started as its own entity, it will look for new ways to improve the game. They also never had the 24 second shot clock. Did he have a hand in changing that too?

I'm saying your point doesn't make any sense, the NBA is always looking for ways to improve the game.

What??? That is exactly my point! The other guy gave Mikan credit for being a trend setter. He is speaking of Mikan as if he was such an unstoppable force, that they had to come up with ways to get him away from the basket as well as implement a 24 second shot clock so get the ball out of his dominant hands. I'm saying they would have changed those rules if Mikan never played a game in the NBA. He was not such a great player that they changed the game to slow him down. They just changed some rules to make the game more exciting.

Now putting in a zone defense and contemplating changing fouling rules at the end of the game to hinder as well as help Shaq's abilities means he was a unstoppable force that changed the game.

When you think of the Lakers, do you think of Mikan? I think of him more as an NBA pioneer. One of the first great big men. He won the first NBA championship. He was a great player in his time. But not above West, Baylor, Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Shaq, Kobe and Chick Hearn when it comes to thinking of the Lakers

I actually dont think Mikan is far above Magic in terms of "face of the franchise", and not even necessarily think he's above him... I just wanted to see how people would react to it...

I do think he's above Kareem, Wilt, and possibly Kobe in terms of face of the franchise... I just think of him more as the NBA's George Washington... as in if the NBA had a Mt Rushmore, I think he'd definitely be on it... (sounds like a thread we had a while ago... :))

Now that I agree with. Mikan has always reminded me of Neil Armstong. The first man to walk on the moon. He was the first dominant player in the NBA. I just see the Lakers being Magics Franchise. He was a player, coach, and now is a part owner. He has never left this franchise in any Capacity like Jordan left the Bulls, Isiah Thomas left the Pistons, Bird left the Celtics, Wilt left the Sixers. Mikan was a pioneer for the NBA. But once the Lakers left Minnesota, he continued to have a hand in bringing sports to Minnesota like bringing the T Wolves there.

I'll just do my two teams since I am very lazy.

Kings: Chris Webber. I'd put him over Mitch because we got farther with Webb as our franchise player. Mitch was amazing though.

Bobcats: Gerald Wallace. Emeka was our first overall draft pick but Gerald has put up better numbers and is the best player on the team, and has been for 3 years now. He is probably the best expansion draft pick of all time.

The thing with Oscar is that he won a championship with the Bucks so he'll be more remembered with them. Chris Webber took the Kings further than any other player besides back in '51 with Bob Davies and that team, and Richmond is a more recent name that people can associate with.

Mikan was in the NBA during it's earliest years. of COURSE rules are gonna change accordingly to the dominant players. that was the fragile years in the NBA, when things were changing all the time.

without Magic Johnson, the NBA would've never been as popular as it was, without Magic, we wouldn't have as many rings, without Magic, the Laker fan base would be much smaller. Magic did much more to the Lakers franchise than any other player.

I'm not saying Mikan is insignificant. but Magic did alot for the Lakers.

I have issues with this list, mainly with your selections for Seattle, Detroit, Miami and Boston.

Seattle: Gary Payton
Detroit: Isaiah Thomas
Miami: Alonzo Mourning
Boston: Bill Russell

How could you ever put Bill Laimbeer over Isaiah Thomas? And Nate McMillan over Gary Payton? Wow, some of those pics were ridiculous.

For Utah: I can see you selecting Jerry Sloan, but I will disagree and say Karl Malone gets the nod. Stockton also belongs up there with Malone.

Boston: It's clearly Bill Russell.

San Antonio: Tim Duncan

Nets: Dr. J

Dallas: Undecided. Maybe Dirk. Harper did not take Dallas as far as Dirk.
