The 76ers could have a veteran backup big man in place as early as today.
Theo Ratliff, 35, a veteran of 13 NBA seasons, has sifted through four offers and settled on rejoining the Sixers on a 1-year contract, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The source said the 6-10 Ratliff could visit with the Sixers today and accept a 1-year contract for the veterans' minimum of $1.4 million. By the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, a portion of the salary would be paid out of a leaguewide pool.

When asked yesterday about the search for an additional big man, Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski said he hoped to have a resolution "within 48 hours," but would not elaborate.

Ratliff was acquired by the Sixers from Detroit during the 1997-98 season and was traded to Atlanta during 2000-01. He was named an All-Star in '01, but was unable to play because of a wrist injury.

He has played for six teams during his career, including 10 games with Minnesota and 16 games with Detroit last season, his second stint with the Pistons. He appeared in two games with Boston in '06-07.

He led the league in blocks per game in '01 and '03, and holds career averages of 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 705 games.

Stefanski also said he was awaiting a decision from coach Maurice Cheeks on an assistant coach to take the place of Henry Bibby, who did not have his contract renewed. Former Sixers Jeff Ruland and Steve Mix and former Atlanta assistant Alton Lister were interviewed last week. *

He played with Philly before and was an absolute beast... then he got injuried (was never the same) and got traded to Atlanta.

Very good pick up, their bench is starting to have a very good look.

They are missing a Veteran starting SF or Sg to move Iggy into sf.

I would make a runt for iverson at seasons end, Championship conteder

He's nothing except a veteran presence. If he's playing more than 5-8 mpg then you are in real big trouble.

great pick up, theo is the type of vet you want in the locker room and working with the young studs in practice, what an aquisition weather he plays or not he is an energy guy that will be there for 10-15 min when his number is called... i would love to add him to the raps... Raps should sign Dikembe!!!

thats all he will be, he wont see more than 10 minutes a game with sammy starting and reggie evans most likely being in the mix

sweet pickup. Now you can watch him tease you for 12 games, then his knee will ache, and he will miss the next 60 games, only to return as a non factor. Great man, but a total injury bomb at this stage. I hope I'm wrong, he is a good guy, but c'mon people.

Not anything to get all excited about, but he will be a veteran presence.

Theo is the worst now. I loved him in Philly the first time around. And I loved him in Detroit the first time around. But this Theo will give the Sixers what he gave the Pistons the second time around...nothing.

He had 38 blocks in 27 games last season I believe, so he's average around 1.4 blocks a game.

That's a presence, and not including the fact he has expierence and energy. You can never have to much expierence and energy guys on are team.

He basically fits are need. An EXPIERENCED big that can be a 8-15 minute ROLE player.

Yea I witnessed those, but his signing is not as important as say, Kareem Rush. He'll be decent. I also think blocks are an overrated stat. You may score off of it, you may not. Sometimes that 1 block may not even be a factor in the game. It just isn't a great stat to me. Now if you're playing great man to man defense w/ it, that's a different thing. Theo won't be doing that.

pretty good signing depending solely on Theo's health. Sixers needed size up front. If Ratliff stays healthy all year he will be more than just serviceable coming off the bench

A block isn't a great stat, but a block is a "momentum changer" so you'd call it. It gets the crowd into it, it gets the team all hyped up and sometimes that leads to a start of lets just say for example a 10-0 run.

The team and crowd feed off of that energy.

I don't think it's an overrated stat by any means, because it's just more then a swat.

Everyone is all down about this and is saying this is pointless need to understand we arent asking this guy to be a 20-10 guy. We signed him for the mininum because he's a one trick pony that can rebound somewhat. He'll probably block like 2 per game and that's what we're paying him.

Man the Sixers have created a very nice team on paper. I can't wait to see them getting into it on the court as well.
