Popovich. Phil Jackson got out coached by Doc Rivers in the finals in my opinion. He didn't adjust well to what the Celtics did on defense.

Others guy that deserve mention...

Byron Scott and Mo Cheeks. Mo Cheeks started Reggie freaking Evans and got into the playoffs. Yes it was in the East, but he got that team to overachieve and maximized their talent. Byron Scott did the same thing with the Hornets, nobody saw them getting the 2nd best record in the West (Could have been #1 if my Kings hadn't beat them).

Rick Adelman is one of the best, if not the best coach WITHOUT a championship.

I would say Popovich is one of the best today, but there are a lot of great coaches out there as well with young and talented teams, like, Byron Scott and Mo Cheeks like DerekRE3 said.

phil jackson is a great coach, but he has had players like kobe and jordan on his team. idk if he coached other teams but those two players make any coach good. scott is an UNBELIEVABLE coach. got the nets into the finals (those teams were not that good) and made the hornets overachieve.

Not every coach can coach players like Kobe or Jordan cuz of ego's.

If youre gonna use that argument then you can say that pop had Duncan and Robinson and building around a front court is way better than back court IMO. Also TD has NO ego what so ever, same with Manu.

What great coaches haven't had great players?

And it's Phil Jackson for me.

Pops had/has Duncan, Red had Havlicek and Russel, Pat Riley had Magic and Kareem.. What is your point?

Exactly. Every great coach has great players. Rarely do you ever see a coach win 3 or 4 Championships without a superstar or two.

Example: Doc Rivers (not saying he's a great coach, just that he finally got superstars and he won)

I'm not saying other coaches don't have great motivational tactics, but what I've heard about Phil on what he did during the three-peat years about adelman and hitler was absolutely amazing. Also, last season he would say things to a player and that player would have a breakout game just to prove the coach wrong. Phil is great at bringing the best out of his players.

Also, what other coach meditates with his players??? Now that is deep.

Byron scott hands down . poppovich is great. Phil over a career is better as well. But Byron is the man around town now. No one can out coach him at this point

i think a great coach takes subpar players and leads them into the playoffs. scott did it with NJ and then NOR. these coaches that are being named are great though, dont get me wrong. but they already had talent on the teams. take a team with nothing on it and make it a playoff team makes a coach look great.

Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson, Chris Paul, David West, Peja Stojakovic, and Tyson Chandler are subpar players?? You might want to rethink that statment.

take a team with nothing on it and make it a playoff team makes a coach look great.

Name me one team with "nothing" on it that made the playoffs. You might want to rethink that statement as well.

Jordan and his bulls weren't nothing without him. They did make the playoffs several times and go to the ECF's without him. Not saying PJ isn't a great coach, of course he is, but to say they were nothing without him is a ludicrous statement.

HOW HAS JERRY SLOANS NAME ONLY BEEN MENTIONED ONCE? He has over 1000 coaching victories. going into his 20th season as Utah's head coach. Been the Western Conference Finals like 4 times. Only lost in the Finals because of Refs scandal and Jordan. Made the playoffs 19/20 seasons coaching. Always discipline his players and often outcoaches others. THE BEST COACH WITHOUT A CHAMPIONSHIP NO DOUBT! THE JAZZ ARE 2009 NBA CHAMPIONS!

But... I think the best coach is Pop.

I didn't mean literally "nothing", but some people in here as discrediting PJ and the job he's done with these teams. They taking it for granted, thinking that they're nothing.
