While Detroit Tigers fans may believe that the Tigers 2008 season is over, the front office is not of the same opinion, as General Manager Dave Dombrowski continues to try to improve his team. According to SI.com, the Tigers tried to acquire left-handed outfielder Raul Ibanez on waivers, but could not come to terms with the Seattle Mariners on a deal.

August 14, SI.com: Time expired this afternoon on waiver claims made on Raul Ibanez and Jarrod Washburn, and both players will be remaining with the Mariners. SI.com has learned that the Tigers won the claim on Ibanez and the Twins won the claim on Washburn. However neither teams was able to work out a trade with Seattle within the allotted 48 hours after making the claim.

There were multiple claims on Ibanez, who is having a solid season, is red hot and is making only $5.5 million in the final year of his contract before he can become a free agent. The Mariners have been requesting multiple top prospects for Ibanez since they expect to receive two top draft choices if he leaves via free agency. While the Tigers are only on the cusp of the race, their signing of free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia was an early indication they still intend to try to contend.

We are already stacked with outfield depth so it wouldnt have made much sense.
