Starting weak-side linebacker A.J. Hawk will miss Saturday's exhibition game against the San Francisco 49ers because of what coach Mike McCarthy called a "chest injury."

"He will not be available this week," McCarthy said of Hawk.

While McCarthy indicated Hawk's injury wasn't significant, the fact Hawk wasn't able to practice illustrates the Packers aren't taking the injury lightly.

It is believed that Hawk has never missed a practice for injury since joining the Packers in 2006. He never sat out a game, practice or workout in his four years at Ohio State, either.

Not the guy I want to see hurt. Not that we want anyone to be hurt but you know. Hopefully he is not out for a significant stretch of time and he is able to return before the opener.

Update 8/19/08

The Packers are calling WLB A.J. Hawk "week to week" with a chest sprain.

Hawk has just under three weeks before Green Bay's September 8 opener. Brandon Chillar is currently running with the first unit on the weak side.

Damn, i can't believe this guy is actually banged up. He does everything he can to make sure that is body is in great shape and even converted his room into a hyperbolic chamber. Hopefully this injury doesn't keep AJ out for to long because we are going to need him for the regular season

We need the big ugly out there...This is the year he has to show why we picked him 5th overall. Thankfully we have a little depth at linebacker this year.

I'm sure if it were the regular season he would be playing. Unless the Packers are just that good at keeping a significant injury quiet.

I think I agree with the Vikings fan on this one.

WHY!:pity:

Anyways, here:

McCarthy was vague about Hawk's injury except to say that Hawk likely would not play if it were the regular season. As to when Hawk was expected back, McCarthy didn't have an answer.

He'll be fine. There is no way they can keep a guy like him down. Relax.

If our team got money for every injured player we would be the richest team in sports.

I wouldnt worry too much. I don`t think its that serious. And at least it happened in the preseason where the games don`t count to the starters and not in the regular season.

I don't know if i would say that it isnt too serious, because i think it could be more serious then we think. The guy hasn't missed a practice in 6 years so for him not to be playing it takes a lot. Hopefully he will be back in time for the regular season

I was reading that he's not so sure he'll be ready for the opener. At least we've got a quality back up/starter in Chillar.

So, if it isnt significant, to quote Vince -- "What the hells goin' out there?"
