DATE: TUESDAY AUGUST 12th
TIME: 2:00 AM ET

ANGOLA PREVIEW:

Key Eligible Players: Olimpio Cipriano, F, De Agosto Luanda (Angola); Armando Costa, G, De Agosto Luanda (Angola); Milton Barros, G, Petro Atletico de Luanda (Angola); Luis Costa, G, Petro Atletico de Luanda (Angola); Joaquim Gomes, F/C, Valparaiso (NCAA)/De Agosto Luanda (Angola)

The Skinny: Angola earned their Olympic berth by taking first place at the 2007 African Championships. Big man Gomes took MVP honors - the 6-8 pivot played in the U.S. at Valparaiso University from 2000-04. Angola finished 0-5 at the 2004 Olympic Games but went 3-2 in preliminary round play at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, beating Panama, New Zealand and Japan in their first three contests. They then delivered scares to Spain and Germany before being knocked out of the tournament by France, 68-62, in the Eighth Finals. Angola is not a favorite to medal in Beijing but they could alter the course of the tournament with an upset.

UNITED STATES PREVIEW:

Key Eligible Players: Jason Kidd, G, Dallas Mavericks; Kobe Bryant, G, LA Lakers; LeBron James, G/F, Cleveland Cavaliers; Carmelo Anthony, F, Denver Nuggets; Dwight Howard, C, Orlando Magic; Amare Stoudemire, C, Phoenix Suns; Chauncey Billips, G, Detroit Pistons; Tyson Chandler, C, New Orleans Hornets; Tayshaun Prince, F, Detroit Pistons; Mike Miller, G/F, Memphis Grizzlies; Michael Redd, G, Milwaukee Bucks; Dwyane Wade, G, Miami Heat; Chris Bosh, F, Toronto Raptors; Chris Paul, G, New Orleans Hornets; Deron Williams, G, Utah Jazz; Carlos Boozer, F, Utah Jazz, Shane Battier, F, Houston Rockets; Joe Johnson, G/F, Atlanta Hawks

The Skinny: It's now or never for Team USA to show they are the world's elite national team. It was eight years ago in Australia, at the 2000 Sydney Games, that the senior men's squad last won the gold in an intercontinental competition. The 2006 World Championship was supposed to be the stage that it proved their global supremacy. Instead, a semifinals loss to Greece ended that hope, and the U.S emerged with a Bronze. Team USA regrouped last summer at the FIBA Americas Championship, adding key players such as Kidd and Bryant, who helped turn the offense into a well-oiled engine. The United States averaged 116.7 points in the tournament and won all 10 of their games. Anthony led the team in scoring (21.2 ppg) while James shot 76 percent from the field and 62.2 percent from three as the roster's second-leading scorer.

No kidding. This should be a very easy win for Team USA. I remember when the 1992 Dream Team played Angola.... It was like 130-40 or something like that it was insane.

Well, after this one, their games will get progressively tougher, and I expect they're saving themselves for that.

Greece on Thursday, Spain on Saturday, and then assuming everything's on track, quarters 2 days later, semis 2 days after that, and in another 2 days, the finals.

If I were them and could kind of take a breather in this game, I probably would, too.

Well, I would hope they won't give us a problem, too. All I'm saying though is that from a strategic standpoint, the time to really batten down the hatches and get into dead serious mode starts Thursday, and it's probably wise to conserve stamina and strength and energy for that effort if they can afford to. Which, in this game, they apparently can.

Team USA had no trouble defeating overmatched Angola on Tuesday, winning 97-76 behind 19 points from Dwyane Wade, 14 from Dwight Howard, and one crowd-pleasing 360-degree dunk from Kobe Bryant.
It's not quite as impressive as the original Dream Team's 68-point dismantling of Angola in 1992, but the effect was the same. Two facts that sum up the game: Angola only has one player taller than 6'7", and in the first half LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony were a combined 18-of-18 from the field. The U.S. will face Greece and Spain in their next two games, so the easy portion of group play appears to be behind them.

It was a decent game overall. I wasn't too impressed with anyone on Angola's team. Marais scored 24 points which mainly came from his 3 pointers. Then their big guy Ambrosio played a very tough game and was putting up a fight against Dwight Howard. Marais could still be looked at for the NBA, he's only 22 years old.

From team USA's end, they played well. Guys like Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Lebron James all did well. Once again though, Dwyane Wade played another fantastic game and is ready to come back to how he played when he won the championship with the Heat.

The reason why the game was so close though was because of team USA's bad perimeter defense. Marais and the other guy (the SG I think it was, with the small fro) were hitting most of the threes, mainly Marais though.

I would think Coach K would want the players getting the job done taking more shots and more minutes.

Just as in the 5 exhibition games kobe is shooting the worst % again.
Now in the 2 Olympic games similar results for starters:

Wade shooting 13/15 (87%) & 67% 3pt while leading team in scoring @ 19.
Lebron shooting 13/19 (68%) & 33% 3pt with 8 rbs 3ast & 4 blk scoring 15.
kobe shooting 10/27 (37%) & 1/15 3pt while leading team in to's score-10.
Howard shooting 11/16((69%) with 5 rbds & 2 blks scoring 13.5
Kidd (not taken a shot in 2 games)

When we have kobe playing the most minutes, taking the most shots but continuing to shoot by far, the worst percentage, especially 1/15 from 3pt the coach should be at least tweaking the ball distribution alittle bit.
With the 3pt line 3' closer, the 3pt shot is more of a factor.

The USA team archilles heel in the past has come from stars trying to get the good stats even when they are off.
And in particular the USA has been burned in the past from poor 3pt shooting.
We need everybody but we also need the players that are getting the job done & match up best getting the most minutes and shot attempts.

For instance, I like Howard better but Bosh has been more effective, why not give Bosh just a few of Howards minutes?

LAcowBOMBER
08-14-2008, 03:20 AM
^^^^
Yea, but if you watch the games it's not like KObe jacks up contested threes. He should be taking the shots that he is taking, he just needs to make them.
