BOURBONNAIS - All eyes will be on the quarterback when the Bears take the field Thursday night at Soldier Field in their first exhibition against Kansas City, and that's not necessarily a reference to Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman.

"It's always good to have Mike Brown back there to pretty much quarterback what's going on," cornerback Nathan Vasher said of his secondary mate. "A guy like that, with that much leadership, is going to help you."

Brown can help most by staying healthy—the veteran free safety has missed 43 of the last 64 regular-season games, including all but one in 2007 after tearing the ACL in his left knee in the season opener against San Diego.
Despite his history of injuries, Brown contends he won't be the least bit hesitant against the Chiefs.

"I don't worry about it, I really don't," he said. "I know some people find that hard to believe, but you can't play this game with any doubt.

"I'm planning on playing the whole season. Now I've said that for all my career and it hasn't happened like that. But when I've come out and played, I don't think you've seen any drop-off in my intensity. … And it's not going to be any different this year."

Coach Lovie Smith expressed confidence in Brown heading into the exhibitions.

"That's not a concern for me—Mike has injuries that we've fixed, and we've moved on from there," Smith said. "Since we started our workouts, Mike hasn't missed a day. So there's nothing I can go on that says we're going to have a problem.

"I know what the history says. There are some freak things that have happened to Mike, but they have to stop. Mike is going to play like the rest of our guys."

He played his first four years w/o missing a game. He's had some bad luck and some freak injuries recently but let's just hope he stays healthy.

The worst part about his injuries is that none of them are related and all of them are serious. And none are due to a lack of conditioning. His bad luck has to end, hopefully it is this year.
