so ED wants to sign another minimum salary big man with nba experience

this are the unrestricted big man with
nba experience that we could sign for
the minimum contract

P.J. Brown
Jamaal Magloire
Juwan Howard
Francisco Elson :D
Theo Ratliff
Lorenzen Wright

Magliore's done. He couldn't smell the court on the Nets last year, and after he was cut no one else picked him up. It's over

I'm looking at Ratliff

AirJordanXVIII

^^ Well if he's 2nd/3rd string he can be decent...

Elson or Ratliff, I wouldnt mind...

No to PJ Brown. I dont like him at all. The reason he got his buckets were because Ray, PP, and KG were triple teamed and he was just standing there for the easy 2.

Elson would be perfect.

id give Magloire a chance because the dude is a big and can hold his own with dwight

I agree ..Theo or Elson would be fine with me. I want no parts of the other guys. Maagloire and Wright are cancers and Juwan Howard just wouldnt fit in. i dont think PJ Brown is interested in playing anymore. He isgoing out as a champion

Also Theo was already a sixer, and a great one at that, It would be nice to bring an old piece to this brand new exciting team.

theo wouldnt be able to wear #42 though.

i dont know about bigger.... they are both 235 pounds and
7 feet tall (link...nba.com) but i do think elson could hold his ground more
but theo could block more

BChydro86
08-06-2008, 01:15 PM
theo is 6'10 and elson is 7'0...theyre both 235lbs. ill go with the taller/younger guy with a ring.

also, how many times do i have to say that blocked shots are overrated and are not even close to an indication of how good of a defender someone is?

Shieldsz
08-06-2008, 01:16 PM
They have something to do with defense. If you are a good shot blocker it does contribute to your defense, i could care less what your reasoing is.. thats the truth.

Theo is just a better defender anyway. It's as if when someone is like they are a good shot blocker you mark them off as a bad defender or something.

Shieldsz
08-06-2008, 01:18 PM
Also:

How is contending a shot from not going in not count as defense? That IS defense. If blocking doesn't count as defense, neither should stealing or many other aspects.

FNM BOY

^^Yeah he prefers the D that doesn't appear in the stat line...but to deny shot blocking isn't apart of being a good defender is garbage.

your right, it is part of defense, so are steals.

BUT....they are both obnoxiously overrated stats. and they are also things that bad defenders can be good at to create an illusion of good defense (josh smith).

Jeff Boyd
08-06-2008, 02:08 PM
I dont know man Shot blocking is a key part of defense. I understand your point the stats dont count how many times you foul going for the block or an how many times you miss the steal and d give up an easy basket.

FreeseDogg
08-06-2008, 02:14 PM
you are just making your anti-block case to hate on josh smith. i'm starting to think josh smith stole your GF or something.

the fact is, some people can block their man and some do it from the weakside. some guards are good on the ball, and others are better hawking the passing lanes. Iverson wasn't a great on the ball defender, but he intercepted tons of passes for steals.

you can be a good defender on the ball and off the ball (or from the weakside, if you're in the post). blocks and steals, no matter where they come from, are signs of good defense because you are taking the ball (or in the case of a block, a scoring chance) away from your opponents.

i'm not sure how a stat is overrated, perhaps overvalued by certain posters on here, but they are measurements of GOOD DEFENSIVE PLAYS. it does not mean the person is an all-around good defensive player (josh smith can't guard the PFs down low, but he DOES make good defensive plays).

ttam68
08-06-2008, 02:18 PM
Magloire played for Dallas last year after the Nets, not much PT but still someone did pick him up. I think Magloire or Ratliff would be good for the job. Elson is thin whereas Magloire or Ratliff could bang around inside. We don't need an enforcer we need a scrub to show some strength and take some fouls.

As for the blocked shots debate,^ they are a key part of some defensive systems and certainly demonstrate that a player has some skills on defense. However, I think the argument BChydro attempted to make was that often players that are great shot blockers are terrible one on one defenders. Its similar to when a player gets a lot of steals because he is gambling or out of position.

That being said, Ratliff would probably be the best for the job because of his past in Philly, but I wouldn't mind throwing in Magloire simply because he is fat and sloppy, and thats exactly the person we want throwing his body at people and taking fouls.

BChydro86

I dont know man Shot blocking is a key part of defense. I understand your point the stats dont count how many times you foul going for the block or an how many times you miss the steal and d give up an easy basket.

thats not my point at all.

there are some guys who block tons of shots (josh smith, sammy dalembert, etc) but they cant hold down their man, or stay in front of them.

and its fine that they do that....thats their game, but it doesnt make them good defenders, it makes them good shot blockers. good defenders hold down their man ala bruce bowen, or big guys like tim duncan.

most(not all, most) blocks from "big men" come from them leaving their man to go challenge a shot from where a team mate got beat, them being the last line in D. some big guys have the ability to recognize when to leave and have the quickness to get there....some do not. it is a hardly a sign of poor D ability to be able to block a shot....more of a skill.
do you guys not remember how much the sixers turned around the second half of the season we traded stackhouse for ratliff. theo's D helped change the entire face of the sixers that year and the next went to the finals.

The Sixers, who have just minimum salary money remaining, were in the process of compiling a list of prospective free agents. It is likely that former Sixer Theo Ratliff, who finished last season with the Detroit Pistons, and Dutchman Franciso Elson, who played last season for the San Antonio Spurs and the Seattle SuperSonics, are on that list. Flyboy , i have to give you props you made a FA thread and we signed Rush and Ivery and now this one... :)

I don't think either can fill the void we lose with Jason Smith but they will do a decent job.

Glad to see Ed is looking at the best 2 availible free agents though... smart man.

Depends what he wants though. We may go with Elson for age reasons but I like Theo because of his defense and shot blocking abilities. He can still throw it down too. I probably would go with Theo, but i like both. As long as Ed gets one of them I give him a

I rather not have Billups for 4 years at 11 million

It is alot of money, Billups and Millers stats are the same. The only reason i like Billups is his shooting is better so he can take a game over better then Miller could.

I love how most trade scenarios seem to have Willie Green in them.....

Because we want Wille gone!!..I would have done that trade if Billups was 3 years younger.... Billups is a better shooter...Miller is better passer and play maker....please don't undervalue Miller.

^^ i don't thats why i said that they have the same stats for last year. I like Billups because he has a better shot then Miller but, i am fine with Miller as are PG

I like Miller on this team more than Billups. Billups is getting old.. although I LOVE his shooting ability, I like Miller's underrated mid range jumper and his passing.

I edited the poll guys.. took out elson sine he has been signed.

I wish we could grab Landry. He's restricted but wants way more money than we can give...

i think a trade will be the best thing to do even tho theo will be a good
pick up but theo is old so i dont know if he will bring it every day
so i think a trade should happen willie or evans have to go to
get something back

i say we go after mikki morre the kings will trade him because they got a lot of young bigs they want to give minutes 2 hawes, Thompson, and Shelden and we dont have to give up much

kings get:

willie green
two secound round picks (2008, 2010)

sixers get:

mikki morre
cash

^^ I like the Mikki Moore Deal because he is very descent and athletic back up Center...He plays with a swagger and brings that attitude and intensity we need on our team. I like players who play with passion and intensity.

let me add that ED was the gm of the nets when mikki morre was there so
is very possible 2 and he did not want to lose him but the
kings over payed him a little bit for they gould get him so very
possible we might go for him
